Publisher's Summary

Jack Aubrey returns from his duties protecting whalers off South America and is persuaded by a casual acquaintance to make investments in the City on the strength of supposedly certain information. This innocent decision ensnares him in the London criminal underground and in government espionage - the province of his friend Stephen Maturin. Is Aubrey's humiliation and the threatened ruin of his career a deliberate plot?

Another masterpiece

While Capt. Albury continues to be an infernal milksop on land, the good Doctor shines in his capacity as intimate friend, and valuable intelligence agent. A rolyal yarn from bow to stern!

Aubrey in hot water yet again

This read more like a spy novel, without much to do with naval life at all. Though it was still enjoyable, for all the slice of life and legal goings-on from another time. POB’s prose is excellent as usual, and the humour of some parts had me laughing out loud. Slightly out of character for Maturin not to see the penny drop till the last moment! All round a nice window into their psyches as men of their time dealing with unexpected problems. When will Aubrey learn to keep to the sea!

Brilliant

I enjoyed reading the books many years ago but Ric Jerrom’s narration brings another level of enjoyment to Patrick O’Brian’s prose. Highly recommend.

Great narrating!

How does Ric Jerrom do all those accents?? Incredible! incroyable!
Less rollicking on the sea but more cloak and dagger.
