Story
The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor. Included on the recording are several shorter works. The Ainulindalë is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age.

J.R.R. Tolkien famously described the Second Age of Middle-earth as a ‘dark age, and not very much of its history is (or need be) told’. "A triumphant close...a grand piece of work, grand in both conception and execution. An astonishing imaginative tour de force." (Sunday Telegraph)
"His astonishing inventiveness remains to the end and is continued in a series of appendices" (The Guardian)

Excellent finale, beautifully read!
A brilliant finish to this epic tale. Andy Serkis excels in reading this LoTR book. He reads with passion and colour, bringing all the characters, country and adventures into brilliant life. While there are parts of the whole story that sound more like a travelogue, I appreciate that Tolkien was writing in and for his time; it must have been spellbinding when it came out. Stunning Reading, For A Striking Book
I expected a timeless classic from these books going in, as is their reputation, but only word of mouth and exposure to the movie adaptations have left me unprepared for exactly the kind of experience that these books really are; methodical, appreciative of thorough world building and characterisation, precisely constructed for maximum impact, and highly engaging in their own right. Not just for reasons I'll mention, but on the text's own merit, there are genuinely superior moments of instilling tone, in comparison to the largely amazing adaptations.
What I didn't expect, not by a long shot, was how fantastic and enthralling Andy Serkis' performance for these audio books happen to be. As a big fan of the movies and interactive adaptations, I find myself actually forgetting the sound of other actors and voice actors, and Serkis' portrayal is the one that's stuck in my mind. The clarity, the pacing, the range and control over the different voices in different contexts, etc., all contribute to something worth experiencing all on its own, just for the performance alone. It's almost like a one-man play, except the seams in such a production are invisible, and the scenes feel as if multiple people exist in the same space, despite what your eyes tell you.
I knew I'd go into this with some level of enjoyment, because Lord of the Rings. Now, I eagerly anticipate going into another work with some level of enjoyment, because Andy Serkis. Excellent stuff, couldn't imagine a better version of these audio books.

It sounds like a full-cast production
I think by now it's pretty pointless to give a blow-by-blow account of JRR Tolkien's masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings (LotR) considering that it has become so firmly entrenched in popular culture. But I do feel I need to share a few of my thoughts and feelings about the Andy Serkis reading of all three books, which total approximately whopping 65 hours of listening pleasure combined.
I've been threatening for years to revisit the trilogy. I first read it around the tender age of 12, one heady summer holiday that had my mom complaining I spent too much time indoors when other kids my age were working on future basal cell carcinoma on Cape Town's beaches. I knew from the moment that I first read these books (I own the hardcover centenary edition, now sadly sans dust cover, with Alan Lee's illustrations) that I wanted to be an author who wrote about elves and dragons, and created worlds I could get lost in. The Peter Jackson films remain among my firm favourites.
So, yeah, LotR inhabits a very special place in my heart. It was my gateway to becoming a SFF author, and it's one of the few epics that has left me in tears at the end. Every time those elves go West. Sam's almost anticlimactic "Well, I'm back" at the end always slays me – that we can embark on these earth-shattering adventures and still return to merely being ourselves. We are forever changed on the inside, even if we present a face to our friends and family that appears the same as always. I can peel back so many layers.
The problem with LotR, is I simply don't have the time to sit down and read the entire thing, but I do have time when I'm doing mindless menial things like washing dishes and driving, to listen to audiobooks. Audible has been a lifesaver, and The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, as narrated by Andy Serkis, are absolute gems.
It's one thing to read Tolkien, and have an appreciation for his exquisite style, but it's quite another to hear a gifted actor such as Serkis breathe life into the story so that it feels as if my earballs are giving me a full-cast production. Of course, as always, Gollum steals the show.
I feel as if I've reconnected with the work in a different way through having listened to this rendition of one of the greatest works of fantasy literature in my personal library, and if you find the idea of sitting down with a dead-tree version daunting, you can't go wrong with these three chaps. Granted, it took me about three months to work through all of them consecutively, but they served to remind me why I keep returning to Tolkien's writing. His wordplay remains exceptional, and very few authors come close to how he describes the beauty of nature. (I realise I'm one of those individuals who won't tire of endless descriptions of bloody trees, okay?)

Andy Serkis is truly a wonderful actor, but...
I feel like he overdid it. For audiobooks, I prefer a solid storyteller, without unnecessary embellishments and over-acting. Due to the drastically different character voices, his narration feels more suited as a dramatized radio play, which is still an awesome thing, but not when my ears are itching to focus on an intricate, classic story unfold.

Incredible performance.
I listened to the 3 LOTR audio books by Andy Serkis. It is just an incredible performance. He does more than a hundred different voices for all the characters, he sings, and puts all love and emotion to the narration to the point that you just stand on the edge of your sit. I sometimes played the book before bed and I couldn't sleep because the book and his narration were just so exciting I had to continue! That is the power of Andy's performance. I understand it may not be for everyone, for the book is performed more than just read, and sometimes he goes a bit over the top, and not all the voices I happened to like (which is me being a bit unfair because he invented and gave life to more than 100 characters with distinct voices, who could even do that!?). But independently of that, which is just subjective opinion, what Andy Serkis did with all 3 books is just absolutely amazing. He is a master of this craft, and this may perfectly be one of the best audiobook performances ever.

Extremely well read. Kudos to Mr. Serkis
What a great reading! 9/10 for me. I don't know how he kept all the accents straight. Great job!

This is THE reading of the Lord of the Rings.
Outstanding performance. This is THE reading of the Lord of the Rings. Andy Serkis has earnt passage to the Undying Lands for his persistence of perfection. No praise is high enough.

Enjoyable
I’ve always been a fan of Tolkien’s various works but they are heavy reads! Mr Serkis does a marvellous job at bringing the story to life with good pacing and characterisations, I only wish he could sing as well as he can talk! The singing in al three books was a bit off putting but the overall narration more than makes up for it, we’ll worth a listen for any fans out there.

attack of the appendices
a wonderful story delivered by true talent, followed by a wearisome but necessary slog through the appendices, which serve as additional lore to both the six Lord of the ring episodes and to The Hobbit.

The Lord of the Ring trilogy.
All three of the Andy Serkis narrated Lord of the Rings books were really good, as good as watching the films. I had to make myself turn the book off to go to sleep in the early hours of the mornings, I just wanted to keep listening.

Incredible
Beautifully read, hearing this version is an absolute must for Tolkien fans, Andy Serkis is a master storyteller and truly does the book justice, There is so much more to this book than the movies, which Andy Serkis effortlessly brings to life. Hopefully someone at Audible can convince him to do versions of all of the tales of Middle Earth.

Endings are painful
"For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
And with that, my first read through of The Lord of the Rings series is at an end. What a journey it has been.
I am dreadful at finishing series, it wasn't easy to say goodbye to the characters I've grown to love. Going on adventures with them in the movies is one thing, but being there for every single moment throughout the books was an entirely different experience.
I cannot praise Andy Serkins enough for his reading of this series. At times I had to remind myself that each voice was read by one person. He truly made it a remarkable experience, one I will never forget and one I will more than likely experience many times over with rereads.
The pace, the flow, the storyline, the viewpoints.. I loved it all.
