About this listen

A heart-warming story about starting all over again, for fans of Bridget Jones’ Diary, written by debut author Jasmine Dennison and narrated by Jessica Barden.

Sometimes you have to escape to be found.

Kate wasn’t expecting a proposal, but when Rob pushed the small velvet box across the table how could she not get her hopes up? Those hopes dashed by a pair of pearl earrings, Kate decides it’s time to hit reset on her life. This time next year, she’ll have the life, job, relationship of her dreams. But then Rob drops a bombshell: he wants to move to America, for work, and without Kate. Shattered and heart-broken, her mum’s “there’s still time, if you get a move on”, her best friend Sonia’s engagement news, and – best of all – her seven-year-old niece Ottilie’s thoughtful suggestion that “Auntie K could borrow Daddy to be the daddy for her baby” do not make her feel better…

Leaving the pieces of her old life behind, Kate retreats to her sister’s ramshackle farm, where handsome handyman Dan is a welcome distraction. But it soon becomes apparent that underneath the idyllic surface, not all is as it appears at the farm – and whilst Kate didn’t go there looking for a new beginning, she might not be the only one to find one…

Story was so drawn out with too much detail, ending was abrupt and the narration flat and dull!

Boring and way too long!

The book was far too long, but I kept reading to the end in the hope that Kate would grow up! She did, to an extent, but in all, the book was quite unsatisfying.

Self absorption

I don’t like to bag a first time author and would prefer to be encouraging but this was tough to finish, even as a nighttime put me to sleep listen. A better editor and narrator would have helped immensely.

The first half of the book, 4 hours of narration, could have been cut to one. Two of the characters and their stories should have been cut completely. They added nothing to the story and were a waste of time- just distractions to wade through before the real story finally took off. Other more important characters were left underdeveloped and there were far too many one dimensional unlikeable characters in the mix, including three teeth-grittingly obnoxious children.

The narrator had a childlike voice whose accent throughout the book varied from posh to so broad it couldn’t be understood. The reading was flat with so little differentiation between the characters that at times one had to guess who was saying what.

All in all an unsatisfactory listen that could have been improved with better advice. I wish the author all the best for her future.

Room for improvement.

This story has a good premise and is an easy listen but seems to drag on certain things and doesn't really seem to go anywhere. The ending took me by surprise because I was certain there had to be more to it - kinda came out of nowhere.
Still a good background listen

nice easy read but not very interesting

I enjoyed this book, it dragged in some places though and the ending was very sudden and abrupt. Overall a good read.
