About this listen

A gripping folk-horror thriller from the author of The Ritual

One million years of evolution didn't change our nature. Nor did it bury the horrors predating civilization. Ancient rites, old deities, and savage ways can reappear in the places you least expect.

Lifestyle journalist Katrine escaped past traumas by moving to a coast renowned for seaside holidays and natural beauty. But when a vast hoard of human remains and prehistoric artifacts is discovered in nearby Brickburgh, a hideous shadow engulfs her life.

Helene, a disillusioned lone parent, lost her brother, Lincoln, six years ago. Disturbing subterranean noises he recorded prior to vanishing, draw her to Brickburgh's caves. A site where early humans butchered each other across 60,000 years. Upon the walls, images of their nameless gods remain.

Amidst rumors of drug plantations and new sightings of the mythical red folk, it also appears that the inquisitive have been disappearing from this remote part of the world for years. A rural idyll where outsiders are unwelcome and where an infernal power is believed to linger beneath the earth. A timeless super-normal influence that only the desperate would dream of confronting. But to save themselves and those they love, and to thwart a crimson tide of pitiless barbarity, Kat and Helene are given no choice. They were involved and condemned before they knew it.

The Reddening is an epic story of folk and prehistoric horrors written by Adam Nevill, the author of The Ritual, Last Days, No One Gets Out Alive, and the three times winner of the August Derleth Award for best horror novel.

the premise was interesting but I felt that the execution was lacking. still a decent listen! narration felt subpar, nice voice but often mispronounced words that made it hard for me to concentrate

okay book, narrator is often annoying

I loved this book and I am so disappointed that they chose an American narrator! It was distracting and it meant that there was a lot missing from the atmosphere. English slang words didn't sit right and the lack of Devon accents was a missed opportunity.

why why why?

Pretty good tale, reminded me of old movies like The Wicker Man. Narration wasn't bad, but it wasn't to my taste, felt like I was listening to someone trying to hypnotise me.

Good story

Loved it! English characters and location doesn’t need an American narrator miss pronouncing words but otherwise he was great :)

Exciting and twisted tale!

I love Adam Nevill so maybe I’m biased but he does folk horror so well and British folk horror? If that’s your thing then you will enjoy the reddening. Like other listeners have said the American narrator jars you out of the wilds of Devon and imo the Audio book would have been 10x better with an English reader. However still gory, shocking and terrifying like all other Nevill books. Worth a listen.

More classic folk from Adam Nevill

Enjoyed this folk horror. Great idea for a core bestial devil at the centre of this story. Played out on the stage that is the red earth.

An original narrative lamenting ancient spirits.

Another great horror from Adam Nevill. My favourite of his after Last Days- the man knows how to write exposition.

Gritty, gory folk horror

Some words were mispronounced - which threw me off. Not a bad performance but the editors should've caught the errors.
Storywise - The gore was quite vivid. A little much for me in parts- but that might be just me. A little slow to get going. I honestly struggled to finish it but I feel it still did a good job.

Not bad

I have never binge listened to a book this fast!
the story line kept me engaged the entire time and Nevills incredible way of painting the scene with words adds layers of foreboding and dred. loved it!

Bl*∆dy amazing!

Let's start with the narration. I could have stomached an American narrating a very English story if it had been done well, but this narrator makes so many pronunciation errors that it becomes comical. And it's not just English places and (lino, Surrey and recce to pick just a few) but everyday, basic English words. There is no way this was reviewed by any sort of editor before it was released.

Then the story. This is bottom of the barrel, hack writing, where every noun requires two adjectives to prop it up. Characters make inane decisions that no sane person would make in a feeble effort to advance the plot. If someone had simply bought a drone in the first chapter and taken a few photos we could have been spared this entire ordeal.

A poor story made worse by the narration
