Publisher's Summary

To the public, he’s a hero: a killer who targets convicted paedophiles. Two men are dead already - tortured to death.

Even the police don’t regard the cases as a priority. Most feel that two dead paedophiles is a step in the right direction.

But to DC Maeve Kerrigan, no one should be allowed to take the law into their own hands. Young and inexperienced, Kerrigan wants to believe that murder is murder no matter what the sins of the victim. Only, as the killer’s violence begins to escalate, she is forced to confront exactly how far she’s prepared to go to ensure justice is served….

Another great book from Jane Casey

And again, I was taken on a journey with "friends", that was exciting, thrilling and overall captivating. Loved the story and the narration and look forward to starting the next book in this series.

Excellent!

Any additional comments?

This is the second book in the series of DC Maeve Kerrigan. The first was a 5* listen and this is even better because the characters are more developed. The criminal case is complex, intelligently written and not at all predictable. The personal lives of the main characters are rich and engaging. Excellent stuff! I'm looking forward to the third in the series.

Good who dunnit

I felt the narrative was really good and would recommend. I have read other novels by this author and was very impressed. The story is really absorbing and I just wanted to keep listening to it and the twists to the story kept me going. Would really recommend this author and books.

Thoroughly enjoyable

The plot is absorbing and well- paced. Maeve, our detective, is engaging and the progress in her personal life from the first novel is enjoyable. It is well read - I especially liked the use of a male narrator when this was appropriate. I will be downloading the next in the series immediately.

Quite disappointing

I didnt feel that Jane Casey was up to standard on this book. Maeve is a great character but I found some of the villains as very 'cardboard cut out' and predictable. I will try one more in this series and see if it gets back on track.

Smashing!

Maeve Keerigan is the kind of woman I'd like to be my friend. She's so normal and down to earth and full of insecurities and issues that make her completely credible. An absorbing and clever story with the right amount of Maeve's professional and personal life. What I particularly like about Ms Casey's creation is that she doesn't exist in a vacuum as so many other characters created by lesser writers seem to do. Maeve has family, she has a life outside of her work, which is so realistic. I'm only on book 2 of the series and am really looking forward to listening to them all. Well worth buying, I definitely recommend it.

The Reckoning - Enjoyable read

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes I would recommend it to a friend, but obviously reading book 1 first. It's an entertaining book, easy listening

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

i think the police side if it seems realistic

Would you listen to another book narrated by Caroline Lennon?

Yes, definitely. I only gave performance 3 stars becausePaul Thornley's performance wasn't that good (which is unusual as I've listened to many books narrated by him)

Was The Reckoning worth the listening time?

Yes

Any additional comments?

No

Another Great Listen From Jane Casey

This is the second in the series I have listened to. This, I have to say is not quite as good as the first, but don’t let that put you off, the first was a high bar.

It is long at 15 hours, but that does fly by, as the story has many strands, not all believable, but that is par for the course in this genre of book. Suffice to say it has some twists. It does go on at times, but no more than many others I have listened to.

The main character Maeve Kerrigan, yes I was irritated by her name at first too, why do detective novelists have to give the main characters such random names! Sorry wondered off there. Maeve is a very likeable lady and gets more so as the story unfolds. She is a lowly DC and seems to get away with much more than would be the case in the real world, in my opinion she is well overdue a promotion.

Rare in a detective novel we get quite involved with her love life, and at first I was put off by this, romance is a genre I do not do. But upon reflection I enjoyed these scenes, which again shows how good the book has been written.

There are some quite graphic violent scenes and descriptions of things done to bodies, which to say the least are not nice. But there are not to many, and that is just another aspect of the detective novel . Judicious use of the 3 X speed button may be required, if you are a bit squeamish.

In conclusion I would put this book at somewhere between police procedural and sophisticated cosy crime (with some romance/violent bits!) A great listen, not essential, but I would listen to the previous one if you can first.

Download it, and enjoy.
