Publisher's Summary

Called "America's wisest and most respected authority on psychedelics and their use", James Fadiman has been involved with psychedelic research since the 1960s. In this guide to the immediate and long-term effects of psychedelic use for spiritual (high dose), therapeutic (moderate dose), and problem-solving (low dose and microdose) purposes, Fadiman outlines best practices for safe, sacred entheogenic voyages learned through his more than 40 years of experience - from the benefits of having a sensitive guide during a session (and how to be one) to the importance of the setting and pre-session intention.

Fadiman reviews the newest as well as the neglected research into the psychotherapeutic value of visionary drug use for increased personal awareness and a host of serious medical conditions, including his recent study of the reasons for and results of psychedelic use among hundreds of students and professionals. He reveals new uses for LSD and other psychedelics, including microdosing, extremely low doses for improved cognitive functioning and emotional balance. Cautioning that psychedelics are not for everyone, he dispels the myths and misperceptions about psychedelics circulating in textbooks and clinics as well as on the Internet.

Underwhelming for the initiated

There are a handful of earnest attempts to share entheogenic experiences in the last 3 hours very moving stuff that I think many walkers can relate to. A “darkness retreat” also sounded worthwhile; but overall, just for me, I guess I wanted more. More stories to see if we are all experiencing a similar connection. I don’t know what I expected to be honest, and there are great safety tips for those putting toes in the pool; but I guess if I’m honest I wanted an Alan Watts figure to walk me through his ideas and take aways from several decades of researching psychedelics and the human experience. A high bar I know. Haha, I just wish an 80 year old shaman would write a book of their experiences with people, gods and the plans that bind us.

I suppose I should be the change I want to see, right?

Great Info but...

I found the information provided in the audio book to be important and helpful but a lot of the content lends itself better in print form. It was difficult to follow the science portions and test cases provided in the audio book format. Just something to keep it mind when trying to decide between the audio or print version.

Lots of information

As an eminent researcher and shepherd to future guides and researched this is a comprehensive point in time look at psychedelic experience and exposure in our country. It is sometimes tedious to follow. Lack of high quality current research (because of government bans) means there is quite a bit of annecdotal evidence and story reports. Hopefully this book continues the tradition of psychedelics for personal growth and healing.

Fabulous resource, keep on hand!

A must read for people diving into psychedelic research and use, and an essential addition to any well rounded, forward-thinking personal library.

It's All in the Title

I have dabbled in psychedelics, but have not yet taken the full journey of a high-dose LSD experience. I'm not nervous, just waiting for the right Set and Setting. In the meantime, this is a great guide to help alleviate any and all apprehensions -- or help you decide that this isn't the right path for you. It is very much fact and evidence based, and the agenda is not to convince you to take "drugs," but to empower you to make the right decision for yourself -- especially if you want to attempt to explore the depths of consciousness. The only issue I had with this had nothing to do with the content. The narrator is just ok. I'm following along in the paperback while I listen most of the time, and there are several spots when the punctuation is not properly adhered to, or when he puts the emPHAsis on the wrong syllABLE and it throws me off a bit. Probably wouldn't notice it quite as much without the reading along part, but there have been a couple examples of this that have stood out so bad that I know it would have bugged me even if I wasn't reading along. Other than that, the content is top notch. Dr. Fadiman has provided a great guide for psychonauts, explorers, and guides everywhere!
