Publisher's Summary

Called "America's wisest and most respected authority on psychedelics and their use", James Fadiman has been involved with psychedelic research since the 1960s. In this guide to the immediate and long-term effects of psychedelic use for spiritual (high dose), therapeutic (moderate dose), and problem-solving (low dose and microdose) purposes, Fadiman outlines best practices for safe, sacred entheogenic voyages learned through his more than 40 years of experience - from the benefits of having a sensitive guide during a session (and how to be one) to the importance of the setting and pre-session intention.

Fadiman reviews the newest as well as the neglected research into the psychotherapeutic value of visionary drug use for increased personal awareness and a host of serious medical conditions, including his recent study of the reasons for and results of psychedelic use among hundreds of students and professionals. He reveals new uses for LSD and other psychedelics, including microdosing, extremely low doses for improved cognitive functioning and emotional balance. Cautioning that psychedelics are not for everyone, he dispels the myths and misperceptions about psychedelics circulating in textbooks and clinics as well as on the Internet.

Not a guide, boring and not well written

After listening Michael Pollan's book on psychedelics I was fascinated with the topic and this book was my next choice, after disappointment with Timothy Leary and his book of the dead. Unfortunately the guide offers very little useful information. The rest is not interesting, boring, not well put together or just raw, a set of scientific survey's outcomes, not even interpreted. I have listened to the end but would not recommend it.

Well informed.

This is a great book. Full of valuable and in-depth research.

I truly believe psychedelics are the future for mental health and has the potential to change people’s lives forever without being tied to big pharma who only motive is profits.

The narration is engaging, clear and enjoyable.

Easy listening.

Great Info but...

I found the information provided in the audio book to be important and helpful but a lot of the content lends itself better in print form. It was difficult to follow the science portions and test cases provided in the audio book format. Just something to keep it mind when trying to decide between the audio or print version.

Underwhelming for the initiated

There are a handful of earnest attempts to share entheogenic experiences in the last 3 hours very moving stuff that I think many walkers can relate to. A “darkness retreat” also sounded worthwhile; but overall, just for me, I guess I wanted more. More stories to see if we are all experiencing a similar connection. I don’t know what I expected to be honest, and there are great safety tips for those putting toes in the pool; but I guess if I’m honest I wanted an Alan Watts figure to walk me through his ideas and take aways from several decades of researching psychedelics and the human experience. A high bar I know. Haha, I just wish an 80 year old shaman would write a book of their experiences with people, gods and the plans that bind us.

I suppose I should be the change I want to see, right?

unlistenable

Terrible narration and a book structure/format that doesn’t lend itself well to an audiobook (too many headings and subheadings in the text). Gave up early on which is unfortunate given my interest in the subject matter.

MUST READ! GREAT BOOK!

A must-read for anyone wanting to safely use these wonderful therapeutic substances. Thank you Dr. Fadiman for taking the time to demonstrate and stress, not only the importance of safety, but also how to achieve the most beneficial effect using the right mindset and setting prior to (and while traveling through) the experience.

Listen at 1.25 speed

I found that speeding up the slow-ish narration made the book much more conversational and easier to consume.

Hard to listen to

Everything that normally is put in the foot notes and list of reading on the topic here is read painfully slow out loud. Hence performance is almost unbearable.
The story adds nothing to other much better books like Michael Pollan's volume on the same subject.
A bunch of links to various web pages that were read out loud in this book might be valuable, I wrote down a few but have not seen them yet.
If I knew what this book is I would have not bought it.

Lots of information

As an eminent researcher and shepherd to future guides and researched this is a comprehensive point in time look at psychedelic experience and exposure in our country. It is sometimes tedious to follow. Lack of high quality current research (because of government bans) means there is quite a bit of annecdotal evidence and story reports. Hopefully this book continues the tradition of psychedelics for personal growth and healing.

Not what I expected

Cool book. But, it seems to go over the same material in different chapters and repeats some information more than needed. I lost interest during a long segment of LSD trip reports, but still finished.

Very interesting!

So many things I was always told and never thought to question. This book helped me to remember to stay curious and not assume that what I have been told about something is true.

Finally an honest and professional treatise on psychedelics

This is the book to guide you safely and productively on your journey. It’s fact and researched based and also includes personal stories from the author.

Tricky

Hard to accurately review this book as found the narrators voice annoying, was so many website links that were long and could have been referenced differently, quite monotonous but some important and interesting information for someone interested in the development of new mental healthcare treatments. Wouldn’t read again the whole way through but some parts were insightful and overall was worth reading the once. Returning this credit for something I really enjoy. Still very appreciative for James’s efforts to progress our understanding of entheogens and their potential for therapeutic applications.

too many website links

holy crap shut the hell up, I know you're reading the book but surely you'd adapt to an audio form. it's infuriating.

Too focused on spirituality

If you are looking for spiritual insight using psychedelics, and don't mind an slightly monotonous talking, this is your book.
But if you are here for the science of psychedelics without focusing on spirituality, I wouldn't recommend it. I stopped after 4 hours and don't think I'll go back to it.

Clunky narration of a fascinating book

The narrator reads out every single character on the page, no matter how tangental to the narrative. Example 1: in URL’s each and every ampersand, percent sign, and numerical code is laboriously spoken aloud... for no apparent reason. Example 2: in a table of statistics the narrator repeatedly reads out “P less than zero point one” after each sentence.

I get that this book is unabridged, but personally I found sections of it impossible to listen to. The distracting nonsense outweighed the content.

The rest of the book was fascinating though! And I hope that the author’s wishes come to pass.

good, but too much padding

this book has some really valuable guidance for those willing to explore the realm of psychedelics, however there is a bit too much history/personal backstorys for what the title implies the book is about. I'd recommend getting the physical version and just reading the guide section if that's why you are interested in this book.

Adapt to audio?

A really good book. Just what I was looking for. Informative , interesting and obviously written by an expert in their field with a genuine passion for the subject.
Unfortunately this does not transfer well to audio. The bored, boring sounding monotonous narration was not helped by the decision to read and speak every minutia of every internet address and +/- tolerance of statistics found as if, if even one 'W' from "www. Whatever" has been missed than nobody would be able to find YouTube.
I realise that if they had said " just look up so and so on YouTube " people would complain that the directions were vague but I'm just offering my opinion that it spoiled the experience of listening for me. I reiterate, the book itself is great.
