Publisher's Summary

Lady Georgiana Rannoch is looking forward to her first ever turn as hostess for her very own house party when the festivities lead to murder....

Georgie, back home at her estate in Eynsleigh, impatiently awaits the birth of her baby. But she has plenty to occupy her: Her new chef, Pierre, has arrived from Paris, and Sir Hubert, who owns Eynsleigh, is back from his latest expedition. It's time for Georgie to throw her first house party to celebrate his return and show off her new chef. The dinner party is a smashing success. Sir Mortimer Mordred—famous author of creepy Gothic horror novels—is one of the guests. He recently purchased a nearby Elizabethan manor nearby because it has a famous poison garden. After the dinner, Sir Mortimer approaches Georgie and asks to borrow her new chef for his upcoming party, and Georgie and Darcy, her dashing husband, are invited!

The tour of the poison garden is fascinating, as is Sir Mortimer’s laboratory. Shockingly, just after the banquet several of the guests become sick. And one dies, apparently poisoned by berries from the garden. But how could this be when they all ate the same meal and the same delectable dessert? Georgie has to find the culprit to save her new chef and her own reputation—all before her bundle of joy arrives!

It's great to have Lady Georgiana back!

Another wonderful story in the Royal Spieness series. I did solve the mystery very early on in the story but I still enjoyed the read and meeting the new bub!

Unimpressive

Blind Freddy could have seen not only who done it but how when and why.

Miss the heyday of this series

I am a big Georgie fan, have all the books! And the last few are just terrible. All of Georgie’s spunk seems to be gone. I’ve been recently relistening to some of the earliest in the series, with great plots and lots of twists, and humor! Which made this one fall especially flat. I feel like I just need to give up on these, but it’s hard to see it end.

Not worth the money

Shocked at the weak storyline. Heard better stories at cocktail parties. I’ve bought every book in the series and this was a waste of money.

Filler

I look forward to the new release each year and won’t give up on it yet, but this did seem like filler.
Agree with other reviewers:
• The absence of Belinda or at least a mention was noticeable
• Bowen has used celebrity characters before, but the Agatha Christie character was somehow both out of place and under utilized
• The plot was easily guessed - disappointing

Additionally, Darcy is starting to sound like a d*ck, sorry! His character has changed a lot.

Entertaining, but flawed…

I hate to only give 3 ⭐️s to a Royal Spyness book but I really feel like this one was “phoned in”. I miss Georgie’s spunk and Darcy’s allure! The plot was weak, especially considering she threw Agatha Christie in the mix.
Questions:
Has the author forgotten that Georgie gave up her claim to the throne to marry Darcy?
Where was Belinda? Not a word from her BEST FRIEND before or after she gives birth?
I realize times were different, but was it really necessary to have Georgie drinking champagne and Sherry at 9 months pregnant?
I also think some of the things Georgie said were uncharacteristic. Example: “I was quite relieved when we were finally shown a lavatory and I could freshen up and have a pee.”
Also, an editing error: Sir Mordred’s open house was on the July 25th, not the 15th as he told Georgie.
I will always love and support this series but I really hope the author will put a little more effort into future installments.

Predictable storyline

I felt that her recent book left a lot to be desired. The Plot was easy to predict with not enough to ponder ( not enough of a storyline.) Very similar to her previous books.

Did Author Forget Other Books?

Was this written by Rhys Bowen or her daughter? Or did she just forget some of her past story lines? Georgie gave up her title in order to marry Darcy, but I in this book she is all the sudden back in the line of succession.

I liked the story, though it ended rather abruptly, but the detail her place in line to the throne was annoying.

I have loved this series in the past but this one was Really boring. Too obvious. Voices were overdone and got annoying.

One too many murderous gay people

These books are like candy and they got me through the COVID lockdown. The characters become familiar as you progress through the series and the light history woven into stories is fun. However, there's a disproportionate number of gay villains in these stories. It's an obvious pattern. This was the last Rhys Bown book I'll read or audiobook.

Soooo obvious and without imagination

Love the Royal Spyness series. Went through the whole series twice already. Normally Rys Bowen's mysteries are just that. But there's absolutely no mystery here. The killer was clear from the beginning and the story while charming in a way like always, was essentially boring and without suspense. Sorry, but that'll be the first I won't be listening to a second time.

P.S.
love Jasmine Blackborrow. She's a great successor to Catherine Kellgran

just finished the last book in the series

over all I enjoyed this series of books very much. its full of mystery, intrigue and generally with a happy ending which is eight up my street.

I enjoyed the view of 1920s society and the challenges of being a woman of any class.

Ending rather abbreviated

The story is a great addition to the series but the end rushed up with little fanfare or drama. Stories could have been set at the scene of the crime, with the murderer unmasked, other people draw into his ‘cunning’ plan looking on with shock/glee/whatever. Instead, it was: “…this person did it so that’s OK. All sorted. Meanwhile….” All rather too quick. Otherwise good fun listening.

Not your best but I think I see where you are going..

I must admit it might be because I have listened to all preceding books and other books written by Rhys that I saw the end of this book earlier than usual but if we are to meet A.C. again and take a dip in Torquay I’m all for it!

Agatha Christie was very welcome here!

As a story about 1930s society I enjoyed it, but the stronger detective elements from the earlier books in the series are long gone, which is a shame, they’ve been slowly disappearing in recent novels and this one had a weak, recycled plot that was obvious very early on (before a crime had happened!), I can’t usually spot the killer but this was too obvious!!

Entertaining, but not terribly original

I’ve been waiting for this audio release with great anticipation. Sadly, it’s been a bit disappointing. All the main characters seem flat, more one dimensional than in previous novels. Queenie was the only sparkle who showed us her femme fatale side when smitten by the French chef, Pierre. Quite funny actually.
The plot is similar to other mystery novels, which may explain Agatha Christy’s appearance. The pacing plods along, but the introduction of new characters keeps the red herrings flying about and provides interesting insights.
In the end, the novel was quite short. Perhaps the author needs a break from this particular series. Wish I had my credit back.

Bit disappointing

I’d guessed this very early on as there is an Agatha Christie similar story . The whole scenario has become a bit pedestrian and disappointing since Georgiana married - she suddenly lost her independence and more derringer do nature. I was a bit bored with this one compared to the others

Delightful escapism

Another resounding success. I have loved the series and the development of the characters and their lives over the books.
Georgie is expecting her first child when murder strikes. An excellent build up to the event with interesting characters. To have Agatha Christie turn up was a joy, another of my favourite authors.
As always I don’t want the story to end! Excellent narration and beautifully eloquent pronunciation, just perfect!

The Proof of the Pudding

As the French chief arrives and takes over from Queenie, with Sir Hughbert impending arrival home and their pending birth of their first child slot are happening at the moment. After the successful first dinner party a local celebrity has asked to borrow the chief for his party. It all goes wrong when guests come down with good poisoning.
With the help of Agitha Christy, they find out who but not why! Read brilliantly again by Jasmine Blackborow.
