About this listen

The riveting New York Times bestseller about a young man who built more than 250 schools around the world—and the steps anyone can take to lead a successful and significant life.

Adam Braun began working summers at hedge funds when he was just sixteen years old, sprinting down the path to a successful Wall Street career. But while traveling he met a young boy begging on the streets of India, who after being asked what he wanted most in the world, simply answered, “A pencil.” This small request led to a staggering series of events that took Braun backpacking through dozens of countries before eventually leaving a prestigious job to found Pencils of Promise, the organization he started with just $25 that has since built more than 250 schools around the world.

The Promise of a Pencil chronicles Braun’s journey to find his calling, as each chapter explains one clear step that every person can take to turn their biggest ambitions into reality. If you feel restless and ready for transition, if you are seeking direction and purpose, this critically acclaimed bestseller is for you. Driven by inspiring stories and shareable insights, this is the book that will give you the tools to make your own life a story worth telling.

Braun is so approachable and real in his journey with PoP. He really leans into the WHY behind his passion project and then analyses the methodology of it in qualitative detail. I love his human approach to business and scaling. This book, along with Give Work, radically changed my view of involving third world countries to the table of their own development and the development of participating stakeholders.

I love how he weaved questions that integrates idealistic visions with actual structures in our world, like ‘what individuals are out there that build civic spaces and businesses that hire world countries?’. It made me really think about how integrated we need to be as a global society, and look at social leverage not as a capitalistic opportunity but an untapped opportunity for humankind to better our collective scale, impact and stability.

The idea of bridging such diverse stakeholders is illustrated so elegantly, through various galas and events that don’t feel disconnected from the actual work being done on the ground. I wish Promise of a Pencil could be more approachable, cause I would love to personally thank Braun for inspiring me on my journey of awakened social enterprise business entrepreneur. I owe so much to this book, as it truely stirred my soul.
