Story
Our attention has never been as overwhelmed or in demand as it is today; we've never been so busy while accomplishing so little, and we've grown uncomfortable with boredom and a lack of stimulation and distraction. In Hyperfocus, Chris Bailey - described by TED.com as 'the most productive man you could ever hope to meet' - provides profound insights into how we can best manage our attention. He reveals how the brain switches between two mental modes - hyperfocus, our deep concentration mode, and scatterfocus, our creative, reflective mode - and how the surest path to being our most creative and efficient selves at work is to combine them both.

Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve.

It's comforting to imagine that superstars in their fields were just born better equipped than the rest of us. When a co-worker loses 20 pounds, or a friend runs a marathon while completing a huge project at work, we assume they have more grit, more willpower, more innate talent, and above all, more motivation to see their goals through. But that's not at actually true, as popular Inc.com columnist Jeff Haden proves. "Motivation" as we know it is a myth. Motivation isn't the special sauce that we require at the beginning of any major change.

Great concept with some terrific ideas
- By Grant Dempsey on 16-05-2017
Publisher's Summary
Nearly all of us want to be more productive, but finding the method that works for you among the hundreds and hundreds of different tips, tricks and hacks can be a daunting prospect. After graduating college Chris Bailey decided to dedicate a whole year to doing just that - experimenting with as many of the techniques as he could and finding the things that work.
Among the experiments that he undertook are going several weeks on little to no sleep; cutting out caffeine and sugar; taking a daily siesta; living in total isolation for 10 days; stretching his workweek to 90 hours; and getting up at 5:30 every morning, all the while monitoring the impact of his experiments on the quality and quantity of his work. The results were often surprising!
This audiobook is the result of Chris' year-long journey, distilling the lessons he learned into a few core truths about how we get things done (or, indeed, don't). Among the many counterintuitive insights Chris discovered that had the biggest impact on his productivity were striving for imperfection, scheduling less time for important tasks, the 20 second rule to distract yourself from distractions, and the concept of productive procrastination.
In this accessible and fun guide, Chris Bailey offers over 30 tried and tested best practices that will help everyone to accomplish more - and become more awesome.

Easy to listen to, light-hearted and entertaining
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Chris recounts numerous productivity experiments. He then shares his personal insights and tips gleaned from them, and demonstrates how the knowledge can be easily applied into almost every aspect our our lives. The narration is light-hearted and highly expressive (almost conversational), making it highly enjoyable to listen to. His style of writing is also very concise and structured. He includes short summaries at the beginning of every chapter, and short activities at the end of most chapters, in order to reiterate and help his you get started on each productivity tip. Overall, I highly recommend the book due to its highly practical, structured and enjoyable characteristics.

Useful and motivational (but a bit unrealistic?)
If this book is read constantly keeping in mind the differences between the author's life situation and your own and then applied selectively (choosing what you, personally, can apply in your own life taking into consideration the restrictions and opportunities you have), then you will probably benefit from it greatly. The main issue with this book is that Bailey took a year off of everything so experiment with productivity. Plus, he made his own schedule. Not everyone has the luxuries he had during this time. Therefore, not all of his tips are equally as feasible, realistic, or applicable in everyone's life. Nevertheless, if you select one tip at a time and start implementing it slowly, I think they can greatly improve your life. I have been implementing a great many of them the last couple of years (obviously, prior to reading this book) and stand by what he says. Still, we should all know our capabilities and limitations (and maybe push them a bit as well). All in all, the book is practical and very easy to read. The most useful parts are the challenges he lists at the end of each chapter that motivate you to really apply what he explained throughout the text.

Great book but for narrator catching his breath
This is a great book and the author has a pleasant voice. However I find the author/narrator's tendency to audibly catching his breath between sentences very distracting almost as if he is running out of breathe. Other than this I thoroughly enjoyed the book which is one of the best book on productivity.

A well intentioned waste of time
No real scientific method is used in most of the "studies" take place and this is little more than a student's musings on productivity and his attempt to be "the productivity guy"
There is very to learn here if you've ever had a serious job or run a company.
I liked the author's narration and he made a valiant effort to keep the listener engaged but ultimately the content has little to offer.

Loved it - except the chapter on sleep
I've read a lot of the books on ideas covered in The Productivity Project. Although I always try to implement the parts I think will have most effect, it was great to see someone unbiased trying these things wholeheartedly. I have actually implemented some of the ideas (especially around food and exercise) and am finding they make enough benefit to make them worth sticking with. My only complaint was the section on sleep - the idea of 'just go to bed early enough, avoid caffeine and blue light before bed'. A nice idea, but for someone who often wakes up with 'whizzy head' at 1 am, I'd have liked some strategies on switching my brain off!

Some old and new ideas nicely wrapped up
The author presents some old and new ideas in an entertaining way. The countless references to his experience during the project and meetings with prominent people are a little bit too much. The challenges (tasks for the reader) presented throughout the book are rated according to various criteria like time, focus required or fun, but I suggest to delete these ratings as they only waste the listener's time.
