Rafael

As the president of the Devil's Mayhem MC, I make the hard decisions so my men don't have to. They're my family, but I have to keep myself separate from them. After I failed my own family, I can't risk failing them too.

A visit from the sheriff changes everything. Suddenly I find myself raising my estranged sister's six-month-old son and completely out of my depth. I desperately need help, and that comes in the form of Omari, who quickly becomes more than a manny to me.

Omari

Things aren't going so well for me. I lost my office job and ended up having to crash at my best friend's house. But that ends after a horrible incident involving my best friend's boyfriend trying to proposition me. Answering a help wanted ad for a nanny position to get on my feet was not ideal, especially when the man who needed the help was the scary president of the motorcycle club I had a run-in with a few months back. But the pay is good, and I can't possibly leave this sweet baby alone with his uncle, who has little regard for him. Raf is hardly home anyway, so we'll just stay out of each other's way.

But Raf isn't the scary biker I assumed he was. I want to peel back his prickly layers to get to the soft middle I only catch glimpses of. But would someone that looks like him be interested in a chubby guy like me?

As President of the Devil’s Mayhem Motorcycle Club, Rafael is as dangerous as he looks. He had to grow up quickly to protect his mother and little sister from his violent father. Now his estranged sister has died, leaving Rafael as guardian of Rafael Jr., his baby nephew he never knew existed. His efforts to secure a nanny for Little Rafael lead him to hire Omari, the only employee who is not afraid of Big Rafael. Omari’s drug-dealing past makes him nervous around Big Rafael, but he knows he can’t show fear and he is good with babies, having helped raise his sister’s children. As the two men get to know each other, their mutual love grows, but Omari’s dangerous past continues to overshadow any happiness the two men feel.

Best book in the series so far! This dark and suspenseful romance hit loads of juicy tropes, including nanny-guardian / age-gap (41/25) / grumpy-sunshine / bi-awakening / hurt-comfort. The romance was steamy and passionate with two strong subplots. 1) When teenage Rafael failed to stop his father from killing his mother, he viewed himself as a failure and it’s a guilty script that keeps playing in his head whenever misfortune befalls anyone around him, and it contributes to his deadly, unsmiling demeanour and standoffish personality. 2) Omari is constantly pursued by his best-friend’s drug-dealing boyfriend who tries to extort sex or money from Omari and the situation gets more and more out of hand. I loved the sense of menace that lurked around every corner, but it was frustrating to watch Omari continually make so many unsafe choices and fail to inform Big Rafael of the deteriorating situation—it didn’t fit with his otherwise intelligent decision-making. Overall, though, this was absorbing with a completely satisfying HEA, can’t wait for more! 🎧 The gravelly voice of Noah B. Perez was perfect as Big Rafael, while the lighter voice of Jace Hunter was great as Omari. Really excellent audio performances from both!!

Dark, steamy & dripping with menace!
