Publisher's Summary

This book offers therapists an integrated approach to adding a polyvagal foundation to their work with clients. With clear explanations of the organizing principles of Polyvagal theory, this complex theory is translated into clinician and client-friendly language. Using a unique autonomic mapping process designed to effectively track autonomic response patterns, this book presents practical ways to work with clients' experiences of connection. Through exercises that have been specifically created to engage the regulating capacities of the ventral vagal system, therapists are given tools to help clients reshape their autonomic nervous systems.

Adding a polyvagal perspective to clinical practice draws the autonomic nervous system directly into the work of therapy, helping clients re-pattern their nervous systems, build capacities for regulation, and create autonomic pathways of safety and connection. With chapters that build confidence in understanding Polyvagal theory and introduce practices for re-patterning, as well as a series of autonomic meditations, this book offers therapists a guide to practicing polyvagal-informed therapy.

I'm a mindfulness meditation teacher. I teach in the prison and in urban communities and young men dealing with trauma. This book was a tremendous resource and I am not a therapist

Most helpful book for my work with clients

In 27 years practicing as a clinical psychologist, this is one of the most helpful and practical books on helping my work with clients, particularly treatment resistant clients with rage, complex PTSD, and various disorders or disregulation. Integrating it with DIR Floortime theory has been one of the most productive ways to help staff therapists and parents in their work with children with neurodevelopmental challenges.

Great listen, learnt a lot.

The foreword reading was difficult to listen to but once in the book I learnt a lot in a short amount of time, and I now have better understanding of polyvagal theory.

A must read for all therapists - 5*

This is an incredible book and offers a radically new perspective on the way we do psychotherapy. I wish I'd learned this in my professional training. I have used many of the exercises Deb offers in this book to great effect. Clients love polyvagal theory and I think the research and practical application is essential reading for anyone working with clients presenting with anxiety, depression, trauma histories... the list goes on. Read/listen to this book, you won't be disappointed.
