The author's loosely described underly assumptions are logically flawed; being based on a false dichotomy between a narrowly defined metaphysical philosophy and observed physical phenomena. He attempts to use selected quotes, often taken out of context, to create an impression of disagreement; presenting normal debate and self critical analysis in mainstream scientific research as evidence of material error in the essential processes of evolution. It is at best naively disingenuous, at worst a deliberate effort to mislead the impressionable or uninformed. Comments such as "you can't change a fly into a horse" are particularly misleading and inappropriate, displaying either an alarming lack of technical understanding or a willingness to lie and fabricate to support indefensible nonfactual assertions. Certainly not what is expected from PhD level scholarship.
The author fails to present a coherent alternative hypothesis. Periodic external intervention in the long history of life on earth is a potentially viable hypothesis. However the current absence of objectively verifiable evidence assigns a very low probability to the intervention hypothesis. Gaps in current data points, or less than complete understanding of the available evidence, does not provide a basis of support for the intervention hypothesis.
I read widely and openly, with a keepn interest in psychology, sociology and contemporary anthropology. This book is an unfortunate example of an individual with substantial credentials who is deliberately disingenuous in his efforts to further his personal theological views. This work is typical of the uniquely American phenomenon of the illogical disconnection and misdirection of the fundametalist Christian world view. Where individually held belief, magical thinking and political orientation are placed at odds with physical reality. I find it both intriguing and alarming to read some of the reviews of this work which uncritically endorse the collective delusions given voice by this author.
If you are one of those who feel swayed by the arguments expressed in this book, please talk to more knowledgeable individuals who may be able to shed more light on the subject. At least please entertain the notion that theological views are unlikely to modify physical realities and that in the majority of world religions the expansive, long lived, complex, and evolving universe we enhabit is a source of reverence: a cause for wonder and celebration, not something to be fought or denied.
