Whenever I want something entertaining and undemanding, I go to my Simon Brett collection. Yes, he has a formula. Yes, it's fairly predictable. However, his characters become like 'friends' as I meander through The Feathering Mystery collection. The stories are classic whodunnits, and they always deliver.
