About this listen

Rory Stewart's sparsely poetic and highly acclaimed account of his walk across Afghanistan in January 2002 has been hailed as a modern classic of travel writing. Traveling entirely on foot and following the inaccessible mountainous route, Stewart was nearly defeated by the hostile conditions. With the help of an unexpected companion and the generosity of the people he met on the way, however, he survived to report back on a region closed to the world by twenty-four years of war...

This is an amazing book. I listened almost non-stop. I felt very privileged to hear about this incredible undertaking, so will written and with such understanding of the local culture and history. All politicians should be made to read it before being allowed any involvement with the middle east. I'm so glad Rory survived to tell the tale, although I wondered why he focused exclusively on the Afghanistan leg - I would have loved to hear about the entire journey. I also really appreciated that he read it himself - although he's clearly not a professional voice actor, it lends more authenticity and his voice is great to listen to. Really one of the most incredible stories I've ever (been) read.
