I enjoyed the depth of the telling and the steady and difficult progress towards a goal. Rory Stewart lives his sometimes dangerous walk with full acceptance of the people he meets and the landscapes he traverses.

This is an amazing book. I listened almost non-stop. I felt very privileged to hear about this incredible undertaking, so will written and with such understanding of the local culture and history. All politicians should be made to read it before being allowed any involvement with the middle east. I'm so glad Rory survived to tell the tale, although I wondered why he focused exclusively on the Afghanistan leg - I would have loved to hear about the entire journey. I also really appreciated that he read it himself - although he's clearly not a professional voice actor, it lends more authenticity and his voice is great to listen to. Really one of the most incredible stories I've ever (been) read.

Rory was amazingly intrepid walking across a very dangerous country both in terms of physical environment but also the inhabitants, some very welcoming others very frightening.. his insights show how impossible it is for an occupying force to bring alien ideas to such a totally different almost mediaeval society.
