Publisher's Summary

'You look the type to break your father's heart.'
'Yeah, but he broke mine first.'

When Rosie Gennaro first meets Jimmy Hailler, she has walked away from life in Sydney, leaving behind the place on Dalhousie that her father, Seb, painstakingly rebuilt for his family but never saw completed. Two years later, Rosie returns to the house and living there is Martha, whom Seb Gennaro married less than a year after the death of Rosie's mother. Martha is struggling to fulfil Seb's dream while Rosie is coming to terms with new responsibilities. And so begins a stand-off between two women who refuse to move out of the home they both lay claim to.

As the battle lines are drawn, Jimmy Hailler reenters Rosie's life. Having always watched other families from the perimeters, he's now grappling, heartbreakingly, with forming one of his own....

An unforgettable story about losing love and finding love, about the interconnectedness of lives and the true nature of belonging, from one of our most acclaimed writers.

Friends and family are everything

I loved listening to this story of people who are searching: for family, for their identity, for a way out of their grief. Rosie is infuriatingly stubborn yet so lovable- just like Martha. The first couple of sentences definitely hooked me and I was sold on Rosie just as I was all those years ago with Josephine Alibrandi!

disappointed

I love Melina Marchetta books. She is a fantastic writer so i was really looking forward to listening to this book. Unfortunately it wasn't as good as all her other books. I found I didn't really care about the characters they were hard to love at times and there was so much back story to the characters that it got confusing to what story went with who. hopefully the next book is better.

Practically binge listened. Loved the way out of tragedy and hardship comes something worthwhile. Heart warming.

Expected more but struggled to finish.

The last chapters were an improvement and more enjoyable. The main character was annoying. Shallow most of book but everything happened to her benefit in the end.

Classic Marlina Marchetta

I admire Marlina Marchetta’s ability to capture so many different types of “Australian” characters from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Her characters are so real I feel I know them personally. Their stories are so relatable and set against a background that can’t be mistaken for anywhere else but today’s East coast of Australia. The narrator was extremely disappointing however. I struggled to get past her flat, almost disinterested delivery, only persevering because - well...Marlina Marchetta!
