Few books have had such an impact as Wild Swans: a popular best seller and a critically acclaimed history of China that opened up the country to the world. Through the story of three generations of women in her own family - the grandmother given to the warlord as a concubine, the Communist mother, and the daughter herself - Jung Chang reveals the epic history of China's twentieth century. Story
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Story
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Brilliance has a name and that name is Oscar Wilde
- By Anonymous User on 20-11-2018
Publisher's Summary
Oscar Wilde's only published full-length novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, is the story of a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for eternal youth. As Basil Hallward, an aspiring artist, puts a few touches on a portrait of his handsome young friend Dorian Gray, Gray wishes that the portrait might grow old while he remains forever young. While Dorian Gray spends his life pursuing fresh experiences and new sensations, his looks do not change. However, the portrait, secretly hidden in the attic of his residence and with which he has grown increasingly obsessed, does. More and more, as Dorian struggles to hide his true identity, the portrait reveals his progressive pathway to dissolution.

Fascinating musings on soul, time, sin & society
I had heard this referenced many times & enjoyed some of Oscar Wilde's poetry - so thought I'd check it out.
Brilliant. Fascinating musings on the nature of the soul, time, "sin", and the society of the era.
Fry's recitation was amazing. Exciting enough without being overdramatic.
Of course, this story was written in 1890 - the language used is what was used in the period. This is the original - not a new adaptation.

Makes u think
For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his own soul?
In part a parable cautioning against the perils of a libertine lifestyle, in part a celebration of such — the Picture of Dorian Gray will leave one with much to ponder.
Though the plot is at times predictable and the characters are perhaps too exaggerated to be ‘relatable’, Wilde’s magnum opus remains engaging throughout. Dense, somber, and sporadically hilarious — readers will be left on the edge of their seat as they await the next pearl of “wisdom” it disseminates to challenge their worldview.
Stephen Fry’s narration is terrific, though at times it can be a bit difficult to discern who exactly is speaking in this dialogue-driven affair, particularly early.
A classic for a reason - read it !
