Publisher's Summary

The Delaneys have the reputation of being difficult guests. When they arrive, order departs, chaos reigns.

Maria, Niall, and Celia have grown up in the shadow of their famous parents: their father a flamboyant singer and their mother a talented dancer. Now pursuing their own creative dreams, all three siblings feel an undeniable bond, but it is Maria and Niall who share the secrets of their parents' pasts.

Alternately comic and poignant, The Parasites is based on the artistic milieu its author knew best, and draws the reader effortlessly into that magical world.

Not her best

While DuMaurier is one of my favorite authors, this book was not in her regular form. It held no suspense and was rather dull.

Inrteresting.

I enjoyed this book, although my first of her books was "Rebecca", and this doesn't quite meet my expectations after that. It was interesting to see how a disfunctional family of artists turns out as adults.

A bit disappointing

Unfortunately, not up to du Maurier's usual standard: the pace is stately and there are few excitements. It's about a theatrical family, and the three children who are allowed to run wild. Eleanor Bron is a great reader, though.

The Parasites

A rare look at life behind the footlights. Glamerous and squalid in equal proportions as well as funny and sad.

Deserves to be better known

Bron's delivery is absolutely perfect. Range, accents, tone, mood, pace all a joy. The pronunciation of Niall was a surprise to me, but no big deal. The story is evocative. A bit thin in terms of narrative, but brilliantly structured and minutely observed. A world the author knew well and one that is now gone forever. A story I shall listen to again, definitely.

Maudlin ..

Almost half way through and have to give up ...No story line, no plot and characters seem to exist for no reason
