Publisher's Summary

What defines a family? That is the underlying question in the life of Pony Boy Curtis. When his parents die in a car wreck, he comes to depend on the love, friendship and support of his two older brothers and a gang of friends defined by poverty, bad attitudes and long greasy hair. The gang, called greasers, carry on a long-standing war with a group of rich kids, known as Socs, a fight fueled by ignorance and prejudice. An American coming-of-age classic, a story of friendship and social prejudice among a gang of friends.

Critic Reviews

"This classic, written by S. E. Hinton when she was 16 years old, is as profound today as it was when it was first published in 1967." (Amazon.com)

Amazing story

I have loved this story since I was in high school and was first introduced to Ponyboy Curtis. Also having watched the movie version I was able to picture the characters whilst listening to this story. I enjoyed this immensely.

Stop! Read this book!

This is my absolute favourite classic. Ponyboy Curtis and his brothers live in your heart after you put it down. I think this is a book every young person should read (or listen to).

wonderful story - excellent narration

The best audio book I've listened to in a long time. I love the film and was interested in hearing how the book differed. Actually the film is very true to the book with much of the same dialogue used. I was surprised to discover the book was written by a woman as she captures beautifully the thoughts and behaviours of young men and I could really visualise the characters and their different looks personalities and feelings. Despite being written years ago, the timeless thoughts and conflicts between different groups, friends, families is still very relatable. Reminded me slightly of Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. Excellent writing and narration I would definitely recommend this book.

An enjoyable classic!

This is a great little story that pulls you into the world of Socs and Greasers, and really brings all the characters alive. Jim Fyfe’s performance is perfect for the mid American setting, and he acts the different voices well. A very enjoyable listen!
