About this listen

I heard voices talking last night. I've never heard my father talk to someone else. Not that I can remember. I was in bed, and I heard my father's voice first. He was talking to someone, and then I heard another man with a deep voice. The man got angry, I could tell, even though I couldn't hear exactly what he was saying. Then my father said, 'I'd kill you first.'

On his 11th birthday, Jacob's father gives him a diary. To write about things that happen. About what he and his father do on their farm. About the sheep, the crop, the fox and the dam. But Jacob knows some things should not be written down. Some things should not be remembered.

The only things he knows for sure are what his father has taught him. Sheltered, protected, isolated. But who is his father protecting him from? And how far will his father go to keep the world at bay?

All too soon, Jacob will learn that sometimes we all have to do terrible things.

From the best-selling author of Wimmera and The Rip comes an unforgettable novel that explores the darkness in our world with the light only a child can find.

So compelling. Wonderfully portrayed through the voice of a young boy. Lied to all his life. Betrayed. Awesome story.

Brilliant

The early chapters nearly saw me abandoning this book. Stream of consciousness style in first person is a bit tricky to listen to but it was all wrapped up neatly by the end.

Strange at first

A very slow burn but a good ending. I didn’t enjoy it as much as Brandi’s other books but they set a very high benchmark.

Tim Potter’s narration was first class

Slow Burn

Intriguing, mysterious, plotting and mental health.
Trying to protect, but evil at the same time. Twists and turns. Enjoying Mark's books cause of the places and landscapes, l'm familiar with.
Also the reality of his books that l relate to. Interesting read.

The story line was only enhanced by a spot on performance! So relevant to the tricky times we are loving in.

Great storytelling! Totally unpredictable but believable ending.

This was a pretty good story. Interesting concept and decent style. The whole thing g was let down by the Mr Squiggle sound effects and the stupid page-turning sounds. What were they thinking!?
Overall, worth a listen if you can ignore the production gimmicks.

Interesting but the sound effects were terrible!

Good story. Well written. Creeping dread.
Good reader.
Imagine…..a father and son, locked at home, completely isolated, afraid of The Others, because of a Plague.

The “son” takes notes while the “father” goes mad- imagining and protecting them from an even worse version of their situation.

It’s an elaborate metaphor of the author’s experience during COVID!! Both characters are the writer.
I suppose he lives in Melbourne. All the clues are there.
They can’t buy anything at the shops. There’s no toilet paper. They can only read the dictionary, encyclopaedia and back issues of the Womens Weekly. They’re useless at gardening and cooking. The food is ghastly. The land is dying. It’s endless dreariness. They stop washing. They smell. The son develops a lump….Is it the plague????? They face the unwanted and unfair prospect of death. And are thrilled by Serena Tuna and tomato sauce. It crawls slowly on and on and on and on….and on.

Any sensible woman would tell these self-pitying characters to buck up and look on the bright side, so of course the weird Father forces them to be quiet or out of the picture, which makes the story a bit grim.

Then, just like COVID, it ends. The “boy writer” grows up and discovers normal life.He gets therapy, a dog, good food and nice relatives then he realises he has to get the crazy “dad” …. who has”disappeared”

Then I started laughing. At least the real “boy writer” didn’t waste his time in lockdown. He dialled up his diaries to “Aussie Gothic” and did “get the freaky Dad” on paper at least before the whole scenario rots into ruins, to create a diverting read on a wet weekend.

Lockdown+Isolation =psycho author
