About this listen

A missing backpacker

A million-dollar reward

Ordinary people cracking under pressure

Busy parents Mia and Ryan were devastated when their former nanny, Irish backpacker Tara, tragically disappeared. But that was two years ago. Now they want to move on and focus on their son … so why are the police questioning them again?

When single mom Beth wakes up to a house burglary, she immediately suspects her abusive ex-husband. But when bad things continue to happen to Beth, her fear is overtaken by desperation and anger.

A dark secret binds these families together. How far will they go to protect their own?

It was a great story. Definitely one I wanted to hear to the end. Might go see what other books she has written.

Kept me interested from beginning to end. Listened to it in one day. All the characters & their stories are everyday people with very believable down to earth lives.
The author has managed to keep the story flowing & interesting at all times. No boring dialogue where you feel like you need to skip a few pages. Overall a great little read. I will definitely listen to this again. I should mention I do come from Newcastle & enjoyed the familiarity of the setting. I’ll be looking for more stories by this author. 10/10

Everyone knows a Beth in their life, that young mother that has struggle after struggle, but with persistence finds success. Didn’t bond with Charlie, too nice. Might have been better as a big supportive brother

Relatable characters

I read the first half of this as a physical book and was so engrossed in the story that I bought the audiobook for the second half as I had a long drive home from holidays! The narration was absolutely perfect. Exactly as I had been reading the characters in my mind and I love how the narrator captured the nuances between the main females in particular - Mia, Beth, Siobhan, Tara, Pippa, Caitlin and Christine. I absolutely fell in love with Charlie too. As I got closer and closer towards the end of the story I really didn’t know how I wanted it to end! Three mothers all trying to do the best for their children - and also an extended community all just trying to help each other out - they were all so relatable. I loved the settings of Morisset and Newcastle in NSW Australia. I finished this story in 3 days and was gripped from beginning to end! Highly, highly recommend if you like Jane Harper’s style of writing - suspense, crime and realistic small town Australian life. Loved it!!

If you like Jane Harper, you’ll love this book !!
