About this listen

Call it "Zen and the Art of Farming" or a "Little Green Book", Masanobu Fukuoka's manifesto about farming, eating, and the limits of human knowledge presents a radical challenge to the global systems we rely on for our food. At the same time, it is a spiritual memoir of a man whose innovative system of cultivating the earth reflects a deep faith in the wholeness and balance of the natural world. As Wendell Berry writes in his preface, the book "is valuable to us because it is at once practical and philosophical. It is an inspiring, necessary book about agriculture because it is not just about agriculture."

Trained as a scientist, Fukuoka rejected both modern agribusiness and centuries of agricultural practice, deciding instead that the best forms of cultivation mirror nature's own laws. Over the next three decades, he perfected his so-called "do-nothing" technique: commonsense, sustainable practices that all but eliminate the use of pesticides, fertilizer, tillage, and, perhaps, most significantly, wasteful effort.

Whether you're a guerrilla gardener or a kitchen gardener, dedicated to slow food or simply looking to live a healthier life, you will find something here - you may even be moved to start a revolution of your own.

Written in the year of my birth I fondly remember reading these words as a young man. Too young and callow to truly understand much of this work then; I do still credit it with being a guiding influence on my journey to now.

'Re-reading' it again after all these years has truly been a revelation. Whilst I don't agree with Masanobu on every point there is much I can still learn from this enlightened Master.

If you feel a yearning towards a more natural and satisfying life, especially in agriculture, then please do yourself a favour and read/listen to this book critically. You will not be the same person at the end, as you were when you started it.

Past Wisdom. Future Hope.

What a gentle but powerful book. This approach of stewarding nature to produce food plants is so contrary to the way we now do farming or even home gardening. It’s deceptively simple but took a lifetime of observation and humility to see the relationships in nature and flow with them to produce abundant food. At the same time rejuvenating the soil. This book of has truly touched me and the philosophy discussions ring true in a world that is so sure it can science its way out of every problem, never stops to think that our meddling is causing more problems. That nature has it all in hand and it all works best when we align with that rather than subjugate it.

Turned my concept of farming upside down

Old geezer with his views on the world. Heard such good things about the book, but spent the entire time waiting for some revolutionary concepts. Overall, disappointed, many better more relevant books out there.

Too many opinions, none of which helpful
