Story
May 1940: Sergeant Jack Tanner has been posted to a training company on the southeast coast of England where the mysterious deaths of two Polish refugees lead him to believe there has been foul play. As the Germans launch their blitzkrieg in Europe, the entire company are sent to join the battle to stop Hitler's drive across the Low Countries. Pitted against the die-hard Nazis of the SS "Death's Head" division and the great panzer commander, General Rommel himself, it is left to Tanner to get his men back to Allied lines.

Story
Code-named Operation HUSKY, the Allied assault on Sicily on 10 July 1943 remains the largest amphibious invasion ever mounted in world history, landing more men in a single day than at any other time. That day, more than 160,000 British, American and Canadian troops were dropped from the sky or came ashore, more than on D-Day just under a year later. It was also preceded by an air campaign that marked a new direction and dominance of the skies by Allies. The subsequent 38-day Battle for Sicily was one of the most dramatic of the entire Second World War.

Story
In the second volume of his acclaimed new history of the Second World War, James Holland examines the momentous turning points of 1941-1943: Hitler's invasion of Russia, America's entry into the conflict, the devastating Thousand Bomber Raids over Germany, the long struggle in the deserts of North Africa and the defeat of the U-boats in the crucial Battle of the Atlantic. Story
'If Hitler fails to invade or destroy Britain, he has lost the war,' Churchill said in the summer of 1940. He was right. The Battle of Britain was a crucial turning point in the history of the Second World War. Had Britain's defences collapsed, Hitler would have dominated all of Europe and been able to turn his full attention east to the Soviet Union. The German invasion of France and the Low Countries in May 1940 was unlike any the world had ever seen. It hit with a force and aggression that no-one could counter and in just a few short weeks, all in their way crumbled.

Story
Renowned World War Two historian James Holland presents an entirely new perspective on one of the most important moments in recent history. Unflinchingly examining the brutality and violence that characterised the campaign, it's time to draw some radically different conclusions. D-Day and the 76 days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed have come to be seen as a defining episode in the Second World War. Its story has been endlessly retold, and yet it remains a narrative burdened by both myth and assumed knowledge.

Publisher's Summary
April 1940: Nazi Germany has invaded neutral Norway. Fleeing north from their brutal blitzkrieg advance are three officers of the King's Guard - men who have been entrusted by the Norwegian King with a vitally important mission. The only military force which stands between the Nazi forces and total victory are the poorly equipped, undertrained squaddies of the British 148th Brigade. Among them is Sergeant Jack Tanner, recently returned from the Middle East. As the British are pushed back from Lillehammer, Sergeant Tanner and his patrol are left stranded in the mountains in the chaos of retreat. Trying to re-join their unit, they stumble first across Sandvold and his protectors, and then a French patrol of Alpine troops.
Trekking through snow-clad mountains with the Germans dogging their every move, Tanner is forced to try and out-fox and out-fight not only their pursuers but the best efforts of his own side. And as the Allies' resistance collapses, it quickly becomes clear that the small band of fugitives can rely on no one but themselves.

Not very good
Would you try another book written by James Holland or narrated by Saul Reichlin?
I am an ex soldier myself and I found the story a bit corny. Saul reichlins narration style did not fit this Genre.
Has The Odin Mission put you off other books in this genre?
No but I would not choose to read or listen to a James Holland Book again.
Would you be willing to try another one of Saul Reichlin’s performances?
In a different Genre maybe
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I just did not like it,It did not feel realistic to me.

Left hanging
I will say l have read all five books in the series and only reviewed this one for the simple reason that the final book finished halfway through the war so you're left hanging as to how Jack Tanners story ends, or the full facts about his past. As for the books as I've said all five read, interest is kept by wanting to follow Jack and his sidekick, the story lines are much the same with all five and they are a bit tame for a rough and rugged soldier. If it was a film I would think it would be age group 12 to15.

Great Book
James Holland knows a lot about WW2 and it shows in his writing in this great story. Exciting, interesting and the final reveal of who the traitor is surprised me. Action packed, just like a story from the Victor or Commando comic books. Looking forward to the next book and getting to know the main character again. Saul Reichlin is the perfect narrator, bringing tension into the story.

Average action figure adventure
About 25-30% through the story, I was bored. Everyone the hero sets his sights on, get's knocked out with one punch. Every superior officer is either a remote, harried leader stuck in an unenviable position, or an annoying ponce whose sole goal is to annoy and insult our hero. This really got to me. The performance was excellent. The reader clear, articulate and capable. The story had a good base premise. Things go wrong from moment 1, in Norway. Withdraw while fighting and protecting a critical individual while being pursued by the Nazis. Sadly, the character development or the hero's and Nazis was very flat, formulaic and predictable. I will not be investing in book 2.

War comic for grown ups
Well sort of grown up anyway (I make no apologies), intense action all the way but be aware there's a few soberingly chillingly real moments, the sentry on the Bridge etc. wars hell and you shouldn't get carried away but this is great stuff, plenty of opportunities for outrageous heroics and heartbreaking loss. Can't wait for next issue, I mean book, Fantastic!

Jack Tanner the 1940's Richard Sharpe
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Its not a bad book, well written and narrated, the story while predictable was a good one and I generally enjoyed the time that I spend listening. A bit less slogging through the snow would have been nice
If you’ve listened to books by James Holland before, how does this one compare?
First one
Any additional comments?
If you have read any Bernard Cornwell Sharpe series you soon recognise the character of Jack Tanner and in many places the characters of Tanner and Sharpe are interchangable.
