Publisher's Summary

From best-selling author Diney Costeloe, a young woman fights to save a treasured war memorial and uncovers a tragic story that reverberates from World War I to the present day.

'This is our secret, pet. You mustn't tell anyone about us planting this tree for Dad. It's our secret.'

1921. In the sleepy village of Charlton Ambrose, eight ash trees stand as a timeless memorial to the men killed in the Great War. On a dark and chilly night, a ninth tree appears. Who planted it and why? And who was 'the unknown soldier' for whom it is marked?

2001. Eighty years later, the memorial is under threat from developers. Local reporter Rachel Elliott is determined to save it and to solve the mystery of the ninth tree. The trail will take her into the dark heart of her own family history, to a great but tragic love and to a secret that has been kept since the war to end all wars.

Heroes

This was a deeply touching story. Shooting young soldiers for desertion was one of the horrors of war and it is good to see this injustice brought to light. Molly and Tom were compassionate people in a time of great cruelty, and their love shines high above the darkness of war. Good story. Thanks.

Excellent Read

This book was very carefully, thoughtfully, and tenderly written. It's the first book I've read by Diney Costeloe and I'm very impressed by her talent. I plan to read all of her books. Highly recommended!

Book 1 of series. Excellent, Interesting, Humbling

Again, Diney Costello takes you back to a time in early 20th century history, that is not mapped out in history books by the powers that be, but is realistic and daunting laced with poverty, politics, suffering and human kindness.
The hidden secrets that go against the grain of high society, but that are the truths of the foot soldiers and lay persons. This story brings qualities of humanity and faith to the forefront of dictatorship and obligation.
A recommended read for man or woman of any age.

Poignant timing to end the book

I’ve just finished listening to another fabulous book from Disney Costello. I think this may be the one I’ve enjoyed the most so far.
How fitting that today is 11th November?!
Throughly enjoyable story, again kept my interest throughout. Such a sad story and had tears in my eyes on more than one occasion.
Wonderful, definitely recommended
