About this listen

Includes exclusive audio material and interview with the author.

As the Second World War raged across Europe, and the Nazi regime tightened its reign of horror and oppression, nine women, some still in their teens, joined the French and Dutch Resistance. Caught out in heroic acts against the brutal occupiers, they were each tortured and sent east into Greater Germany to a concentration camp, where they formed a powerful friendship. In 1945, as the war turned against Hitler, they were forced on a Death March, facing starvation and almost certain death. Determined to survive, they made a bid for freedom, and so began one of the most breathtaking tales of escape and resilience of the Second World War.

The author is the great-niece of one of the nine, and she interweaves their gripping flight across war-torn Europe with her own detective work, uncovering the heart-stopping escape and survival of these heroes who fought fearlessly against Nazi Germany and lived to tell the tale.

An incredible story of nine courageous young women.
This book was so well written, with the individual back stories of the women woven through the remarkable story of their escape.
The narration I feel could have been better, actually after listening to the author being interviewed at the end of the book, I wish she had done the narration. Better pronunciation.

Very very good

This book is such an important story told by a great niece of a holocaust survivor and her friends that lived to create lives past the horrors of the 2nd World War. Compelling in detail, some of which has been deliberately omitted due to the horrific nature of the details.
Listen to the authors interview after the book ends.
We all have family members that lived through WW2 in some way and it will help you understand their silent pain.
The narrator was outstanding

What an absolute shame such an important story had such a terrible narrator. Sucking in breath like she was on a ventilator, was very off putting, distracting and irritating. I would not like to listen to any other stories read by her.

Terribly irritating narration.
