About this listen

Four generations of women experience love, loss, war and hope from the rise of Nazism to the Cuban Revolution and, finally, the fall of the Berlin Wall in this sweeping novel from the internationally bestselling author of The German Girl.

Sydney Morning Herald Best Reads of the Year for 2023

Berlin, 1931: Ally Keller, a talented young poet, is alone and scared when she gives birth to a mixed-race daughter she names Lilith. As the Nazis rise to power, Ally knows she must keep her baby in the shadows to protect her against Hitler’s deadly ideology of Aryan purity. But as she grows, it becomes more and more difficult to keep Lilith hidden, so Ally sets in motion a dangerous and desperate plan to send her daughter across the ocean to safety.

Havana, 1958: Now an adult, Lilith has few memories of her mother or her childhood in Germany. Besides, she’s excited for her future with her beloved Martin, a Cuban pilot with strong ties to the Batista government. But as the flames of revolution ignite, Lilith and her newborn daughter, Nadine, find themselves at a terrifying crossroads.

Berlin, 1988: Nadine has spent her entire life avoiding the truth about her own family’s history. It takes her daughter, Luna, to convince her to uncover the truth about the choices her mother and grandmother made to ensure the survival of their children. And it will fall to Luna to come to terms with a shocking betrayal that changes everything she thought she knew about her family’s past.

Critic Reviews

'intense, heartbreaking and rewarding'
'The Night Travelers is an atmospheric, absorbing, heartfelt tale . . . stays with you long after you finish the final page.'
'A moving historical saga woven from threads of persecution, guilt, sacrifice and survival.' (Sydney Morning Herald)
‘A stunning multigenerational story involving WWII Germany and the Cuban Revolution … Correa makes palpable the sacrifices made by Ally and Lilith for their children’s survival, and the taut pacing keeps the pages flying. Readers will be deeply moved.’
‘A bloodline of stubborn, courageous women navigates the horrors of World War II and its rippling aftereffects … [The characters] are complex and singular; their interiors are richly drawn and illustrate how history unfolds in increasingly complex ways within individual psyches despite passing time and space. Readers will appreciate the emotional payoff.’
The Night Travelers depicts the dangers mixed race people faced under the Nuremberg Race Laws of the 1930s, and the fateful voyage of the St Louis liner to Cuba. Based on historical events, Armando has written a tale of love and survival, and the trauma of displacement in a new land as secrets and pain of the past follow new generations. A very good read.’ (Maya Lee, co-author of The Nazis Knew My Name)
'one of the most powerful and emotionally charged novels I have ever read.' (Anita Heiss)

Well told story of loss through many generations. Would have preferred a female narrator, but good narrator.

Armando’s best yet. An epic multi generational story with unforgettable characters facing the most extraordinary of circumstances.

Beautiful and equal parts uplifting and heartbreaking

I loved this story for two important reasons: 1. Even though this is fictional, historical depictions are very real and must not be forgotten. 2. The grace and beauty of these women and their ability to hope in the most desperate conditions.

Beauty of resilience and hope

I felt rushed throught this novel, with jumps of months, years or even decades at a time, before the characters had been given time to develop, and without a chance for me to develop attachment to them. Good ideas and epic timeline, maybe just needed more time as felt a bit superficial or glib. But broadly enjoyable

Good, but needed more development
