Like a good wine

James Lee Burke is possibly the best writer living today. He just gets better and better. Will Patton has again performed to the highest standard, delivering with every word or sound that comes out of his mouth. Like a good wine, both narrator and writer improve with age. They never fail to entertain me and leave me yearning for the next instalment.

Not up to James Lee Burke’s usual standards

An over-long story seemingly padded out with much too much pointless description. Usually I like Lee Burke’s atmospheric descriptions of the Deep South but this time it seemed like he was filling for the inadequacies of the plot. The narration, on the other hand was very good.

Not his best

Way too much Dave Robicheau introspection and please leave Alafare out of the next book. Makes the ending so obvious and predictable when she is in danger at the end

James Lee Burke at his very best

This is a great story that is full of fantastic imagery both surreal and ethereal at times. His characters are well known, well drawn, mystical and sometimes stretching belief. His writing is at his poetic best. The narration was excellent with an array of character voices. Sometimes a back pedal on the dramatic in the narration delivery could have been employed. This has to rate as one of Burkes best books.

Excellent

Will Patton IS Dave Robicheaux to me now! the perfect reader for James Lee Burkes elegiac prose that is a hymn to the lost beauty of the Cajun world and the splendor of the Louisiana landscapes.

great as usual

beautifully written, brilliantly read. i don't like the way this one ends though. the one problem is that all the robicheaux books are the same. my tip is: leave good gaps between listening to them.

Another Robicheax Triumph

James Lee Burke is in elegaic mood with this haunting and doom - laden thriller starring our much loved Louisiana cop Dave Robicheax who knows he can't change the world, but thankfully for us, his loyal and loving readers, the world can't change him either. There are plenty of plot twists, colourful characters and red herrings with some really evil people playing bad with the tarot deck. The imagery is lush, rich and hauntingly beautiful amidst the ghosts and the living in this incredible novel. Best of all, Smiley's back. This is a rich treat to be savoured like a cold beer and a jack back in a dark bar on a sunny day... or maybe a nice ice cream if you're more like smiley!

Absolutely fantastic

Never fails - the description of the area / geography / smells / light / pressure / humidity and characters evoke pictures in my mind I don’t get with any other author. This man can write and this book is fantastic. The narration was also a triumph. I feel Like I have known Dave and Clete and Alifair all their lives. Bravo JLB bravo.

Captivating

Good story, very atmospheric. Started really promising, list it a little in the middle. Didn't really understand why in the end. Good characters though and the narration was the best.
