About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
From the bestselling and award-winning author of The Hatmakers: an enchanting tale that reimagines the young lives of Merlin, Arthur and Guinevere, and reveals the origins of Maker magic.
Gwyn has never wanted to act like a lady. She much prefers fighting with her wooden sword to weaving intricate tapestries.
When her father takes her to join the royal court at Tintagel, Gwyn meets Merlin: a wild young boy with unique powers, in desperate need of her help. They flee Tintagel together, and before long, the young prince, Arthur, joins them.
So begins an epic journey across ancient Britain, involving giants, mermaids, unicorns and witches - and their discovery of a truly monstrous plan. This band of unlikely friends must prevent the mythical Oakheart - the foundation of all magic in the land - from being stolen. Or magic will be lost forever . . .
Discover the beginnings of Maker magic, and meet Cordelia Hatmaker's legendary ancestors, in this thrilling story.
Tamzin takes the story of Arthur, Merlin, Guinevere and builds on it to create a unique spin on the characters, weaving a myth of her own.
Gwynn and her father have been travelling when they visit the king of Britannia, where she finds that her father has arranged to leave her with the king. Horrified of being stuck in the castle, and potentially being married to the prince, an arrogant and dimwitted Arthur she escapes with the help of a young wild boy named Merlin.
Gwynn, Merlin and Arthur make an unlikely trio as they travel around the country trying to rescue a rare magical creature her father trapped, as they do they learn about themselves, magic, the violence that humanity can bring and, perhaps they can save magic on the way.
There’s not a lot that’s familiar in this stories for people who loved the Maker series, but for people familiar with the myths of King Arthur you’ll find lots to enjoy. I particularly loved the Epilogue which references those legends.
Although it’s written as an ancient prequel to the Maker series you do not need to read it last, there are so few links to the previous stories and the world they live in that it could’ve been its own stand alone text. This is a fun tale, with characters that seem familiar and a world of magic which kids will enjoy.
A great middle grade reader (8+) for fans of myths, magic, friendship, sacrifice and destiny.
