Story
On the island of Big Tancook, Collie Jones is making plans. She informs the islanders that it’s time to resume her original mission - to find other survivors, screen them, and return them to the island. Every survivor she brings back is one more valuable addition to the skill and gene pool. But first, she must return to the place whence she came. She must secure the elaborate government bunker called Whitecap and its vast stores of munitions within.

Story
After a long day of prepping a house for painting, all Gus Berry wanted was the night off to spend some time with his girlfriend and relax before having to return to work the next morning. But that isn’t going to happen. Because Gus’s co-worker Benny has found a one-night job at the local Mollymart East, a job that has to be done by morning. If Gus and his paint crew can complete the work by then, it could mean huge business with a respected, established grocery store chain.

Publisher's Summary
Mountain Man, book 1: Boomstick. Samurai bat. Motorcycle leather. And the will to live among the unliving. Augustus Berry lives a day-to-day existence comprised of waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the inevitable day when "they" will come up the side of his mountain and penetrate his fortress. Living on the outskirts of a city and scavenging for whatever supplies remain after civilization died two years ago, Gus knows that every time he goes down into undead suburbia could be his last.
Not only does he face a corpse-infested urban hell, human scavengers, and unending loneliness, but now a new mystery has risen.... The undead are disappearing from the streets. A force is gathering, beyond the mountain man's wildest nightmares, even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it's preparing to hunt. Contains graphic language and scenes of violence.
Safari, book 2: A new mystery has risen for Gus - the undead are disappearing from the streets. A force is gathering, beyond the mountain man's darkest nightmares, even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it's preparing to hunt.
Hellifax, book 3: A serial killer stalks the ice-glazed streets. Half-frozen deadheads choke the avenues. Infected vermin rise from the labyrinth of sewer systems, hungry for warm flesh. And a handful of survivors struggle to escape and find someplace safe. In his hunt for Tenner, Scott discovers he must contend with all of this, before things truly get worse. Welcome to Hellifax.

Quite enjoyable but left me somewhat unsatisfied
Any additional comments?
It's a very entertaining book, specially with the performance of R.C. Bray, however it suffers from what I feel is the "mainstream" zombie theme; zombies in the story are the type that are so slow, dumb, exploitable and easy to kill that it makes it really hard to believe how it all became an "apocalypse".

Engaging at times but hyper-masculine
Some moments of this book were very entertaining and the narrator was great. However the plot was overly repetitive - Gus would do something dumb and macho (hence the hyper-masculine criticism), get into a huge amount of trouble and somehow extract himself from it by doing something super macho. Tedious. Also totally unrealistic - someone prone to such dumbassery wouldn’t have survived as long as Gus is supposed to have done. This realisation every time he does something stupid really detracts from the tale.

The Earth Abides
My opinion may get lost in the hordes other reviews already swarming around this three-in-one book. Still, I'll pitch a tiny squeak into the clamoring accolades because, other than serving my ego, it might be worth it to anyone who is familiar with the classic novel Earth Abides, which is a 1949 post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by George R. Steward.
There is strong parallelism between Blackmore's Mountain Man Omnibus: Books 1-3 and Steward's Earth Abides. While Earth Abides has nothing to do with zombies, the main character is a force of nature or force of something other than a person. In the Mountain Man Omnibus series, an apocalyptic event is also the character. Steward is asserted to be the father of this approach/sub-genre. Certainly, Steward he created and opened a portal that a select few like Blackmore have skillfully, impressively stepped through. More pointedly though, is Blackmore's adept characterization of a very specific sub-event that takes place, with recognizable similarity, in Steward's Earth Abides' world. My intent is not to give anything away so I'll swerve miles clear of that and stop right there.
Also, I do not mean my comment as a criticism of Blackmore as he gave renewed life and fresh identity to work that, while precious and classic, is very likely now under-read and under-appreciated. Blackmore proffers plenty of never-before exposed (perhaps that phrase is too strong but you know what I mean) terrain to keep the Omnibus journey feeling garden fresh, and he certain brings a unique voice to the genre. I compliment him on being well-read and for evidently holding George R. Steward's work in high regard. The best form of flattery is imitation...
As for me, I hold them both in high regard. Blackmore is certainly smart by avoiding reinvention of Steward's wheel, and instead making it shimmer anew in brilliant light.
The narration was superb. R. C. Bray kept it personal and read as if the story were his own.

Great read, keeps you engaged
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. It's a great read if you're into zombie books. I found reasons to have alone time or take long drives because I wanted to hear how it turned out.
What did you like best about this story?
I was interested in the characters and their development; made me root for certain characters and despise others (oh, and the action wasn't bad either!). It was like watching a great mini series where you really can't wait for the next episode to see what happens next.
What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?
As usual, amazing. I've started choosing books solely because he's the narrator.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's a zombie book...so no. :-)
Any additional comments?
Good read if you want to take a mental break and hear a great action story.

Got Ominbus?
One Credit, Three Great Books
First, let me say these are great Zombie books at regular price, the fact that two of them are basically free is a great deal. You can spend three credits or three times the money, for the price of this one omnibus. Even if you did not like the first book, you would only be out one credit. The even greater thing about this series, is that you can get, The Hospital, for free. Get that and if you don't love it, don't buy the omnibus. If you like The Hospital, you will like these three books.
Gus is the star of the first two books. He is a regular guy, no solider, no special training, everything he knows he learned watching movies from the Seventies and Eighties. He scratches his junk, worries about his bowel movements and does a lot of drinking. A lot of drinking. EVERY MORNING I SQUEEZE PIPE. I enjoyed the second book, Safari the most. Gus is pretty much the only character. We kind of watch him go mad. He has lived alone for a long time and his best friend his a bottle of Captain Morgan. It is kind of like Tom Hanks in Castaway and his soccer ball. There is a lot of language and a lot of gore.
The third book is great, but not as good as the first two. Scott is the main character and he is just not as interesting as Gus. There are some slow parts or some shoot-em up parts that bored me, but not many. This book is grosser then the first two and has some well written scenes. When Scott takes a walk with the Zombies and starts to panic, I almost had a panic attack with him. Very well written. The third book especially, you want to listen in as large as chunks as possible. The longer you listen the more you become part of the characters. Anytime you quit and come back, it takes a little while to get that involved again. I actually missed an exit once, I was so into the story.
Bray is perfect, perfect, perfect.

A MILLION WAYS TO DESCRIBED CRUSHING A HEAD
What would have made The Mountain Man Omnibus better?
NOT WASTING MY MONEY ON THIS REALLY STUPID BOOK.
What could Keith C. Blackmore have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
A LITTLE KILLING OF THE DEAD ZOMBIES IS ONE THING, BUT NOT AN ENTIRE BOOK OF SMASHING HEADS WITH SPLATTERING BRAIN MATTER DESCRIBED 100,000 TIMES GETS REALLY OLD FAST
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of R. C. Bray?
BRAY WAS FINE BUT I FELT SORRY FOR HIM AND HIS NIGHTMARES AFTER READING US THIS STUPID STORY!
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Mountain Man Omnibus?
I WOULD HAVE CUT OUT 4/5THS OF THE BOOK BY STOPPING THE DISCRIPTIONS OF A MILLION WAYS TO KILL A ZOMBIE, THE CRUNCHING OF BONES, THE DISPERSMENT OF BRAINS, AND THE WAY BLOOD AND GUTS LOOKS ON THE WALL OR SIDEWALK.
Any additional comments?
YEAH, AUDIBLE, I WANT MY MONEY BACK ON THIS ONE. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANYONE.

Laid-back Zombie Horror
This really is good value, three books for one credit and the best part of thirty hours audio. Mountain Man takes a fairly laid back approach to the zombie genre and pitches you straight into the post-apocalypse. No creepy prologue, no building of the tension, no panic as the zombies gradually take over the world. Instead we join Gus, the Mountain Man, who has managed a life of relative luxury for himself by post-apocalyptic standards thanks to finding a fortunate location to hole up in. He spends most of his time drunk and isn’t exactly the sophisticated socialite around town . . . so naturally I loved him! There’s very little new here for fans of the genre except perhaps the often more laid back approach to the whole situation.
Don’t be fooled though, these books don’t exactly hold back many punches when it comes to the horror sides of either zombies or the residual humanity. The genuinely evil Tenner will put paid to any doubts about that. You can if you want do a check on horror levels and some of the style of the books by listening to “The Hospital” which is a free, short prequel which goes rather further than I had imagined it would in the maternity ward. If you are okay with that then you should be okay with the rest but note it is as gruesome as most books of this kind. Gus’s attempts at self-dentistry at one point did have me genuinely wincing . . .
The series gets criticised a lot for being repetitive and I can see that. There’s a lot of fight zombies, get drunk, wake up with a hangover in the first couple of books and when a new undead terror emerges it almost seems like the groups of characters take turns to have the same battle against them. That said, the three books included here have very distinctive characters. The first introduces the two main protagonists in Gus and Scott as well as the evil Tenner. The second sees Gus alone doing his “Castaway” thing trying to survive alone and it gets pretty claustrophobic at times in that addled mind of his. The third and longest follows Scott’s story on his mission of revenge. It’s much more a standard post-apocalyptic zombie story with one or two human and added undead horrors thrown in.
The narration, the great RC Bray, possibly not quite as at home with these as say the Arisen series but still excellent nonetheless. In all, three books in one, check out the free short in The Hospital if you have doubts and if you like that these three books for one credit represent a high value proposition. It’s a mix of black humour and plenty of horror / violence. If that’s your thing, these are worth checking out.

Zombies meets Mad Max
Overall the Mountain Man is by no mean the most technical story in the world. The characters are not too complex and the trajectory is not exactly unexpected. The words "easy listening/reading" come to mind. This is particularly true for the first two books, where the last in this omnibus is a bit of a diversion. Having said that, it is no less than what you could ask for from an awesome zombie story.
A previous reviewer comments how it would be a bit of a gruel to listen to all three books continuously. Me and my partner took heed of this advice by splitting it up with others in our library but we'd have to agree that it is most likely much more enjoyable if broken up.
Simply put: we thoroughly enjoyed this omnibus. Keith Blackmore is a great writer, very effective at building a picture but at the same time keeping it lite and flowing. And for R. C. Bray it’s just another awesome reading with great delivery and no stumbles whatsoever – every pronunciation, emphasis and pause is just perfectly placed. Bray seems to get a little better at distinguishing character voices in the later volumes but that’s no bother as there’s fewer characters earlier on anyway.
The second book seems to start introducing some inconsistencies to its own logic that had us on a bit of a “hmm, oh well, this could all fall apart” type thing. But the third book seemed to address this (if only fleetingly) and answered (if I remember correctly) all our questions that popped up. The final book balanced on potentially going a little repetitive with the whole “escaping from zombies” scenario but totally makes up for it by diverting entirely, even poking fun at itself towards the final climax.
Brilliant and well placed humor, soft but dark. Gripping most of the way through but not too full of twists and cliffhangers. And one final note: it is full on BRUTAL. Blackmore turns dead flesh into an art-form. You've just got to hear it to understand.
Totally looking forward to the next book “Well Fed”.

Canadian takeaway
There are many, Zombie survival story's out at the present. This is up there as one of the best. New heroes evolve as does the story, it would be interesting to see if there's a forth book in the series to catch up with Gus!
A really interesting read, with the twist of serial killers and canables thrown into the mix!

another virus....
Started listening to this series just as Covid-19 hit, and we all went into lockdown. Complete co-incidence. Made me look at my store cupboard and pantry supplies in a whole new light. I did find myself looking to check I had easy access to my attic if need be though - and I found "staying in" quite easy when my brain morphed the fiction of the story with our weird lockdown reality. It's a typical zombie apocalypse story. Lots of fighting. Lots of bad guys and a few good guys. (why is it that the nutters and psychopaths always seem to be amongst the last people standing in these things?). Well narrated, and an easy listen if the apocalypse genre is what you're into. Personally, I think I need real escapism in the future - this one seemed a little too close to home in the current climate.

Good start, but gets tiresome by 3rd book
Any additional comments?
If I'd reviewed this book after finishing the first book in the series, I'd have given it 5 stars. By the end of the second, I'd started to lose a little interest and lost a lot of any 'connection' with Gus as the protagonist. I'm actually still on the third book and to be honest I'm having trouble finishing it as it's lost it's appeal now. The story of the first book starts great, straight into the situation with no preamble of how the zombie situation began. It has a good pace and the introduction of Scott is well placed and the two characters work well within the context of the story. However this pace falls off in the second book, and Gus starts to become a bit of a sad-case and I began to lose interest in how he would get out of his situation. The story of Gus then simply ends quite abruptly when he is 'rescued'. As others have said, the storyline is very repetitive and while some haven't had a problem with this, I've struggled with it and now by book 3 it's difficult going to the point that I'm not really interested anymore on hearing what happens to Scott. As such I'm sorry to say I can only give it 3 stars, however I would say that the first book is a very enjoyable read, but since you can get the whole 3 books for a single credit, it makes sense to get the entire content and see if you like it. I give it 4 stars overall as the story is very well read and the first book is well worth a read, but its only 3 stars for the story as the second and third books really fall off in my opinion.

Stunning description
Great tale of how life could unfold and characters who may crop up in a nightmare world. A far deeper insight into the daily lives of a few than some in the zombie genre. I loved it.

A Big Disappointment
Purchased the trilogy and was so bored with it after the first book I struggled through the second. Skipped chapters and didn’t make any difference.

Gus
what beautifully descriptive scenes and then there's the horror! loved all the main characters the good the bad and the ugly. the narrator's "gravelly " voice for the different characters was brilliant. I could have listened to this forever. some really horrific scenes that made my toes curl. loved it
