Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Story
We live in a world that's obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn't knock, there are ways to build a door.

Publisher's Summary
Coexisting but conflicting needs create self-sabotaging behaviors. This is why we resist efforts to change, often until they feel completely futile. But by extracting crucial insight from our most damaging habits, building emotional intelligence by better understanding our brains and bodies, releasing past experiences at a cellular level, and learning to act as our highest potential future selves, we can step out of our own way and into our potential.
For centuries, the mountain has been used as a metaphor for the big challenges we face, especially ones that seem impossible to overcome. To scale our mountains, we actually have to do the deep internal work of excavating trauma, building resilience, and adjusting how we show up for the climb. In the end, it is not the mountain we master, but ourselves.

Kept holding out for some wisdom… didn’t find any
I wanted to quit listening from 30 minutes in but thought there must be something of substance in it. Nope. Not only did this book not provide any actionable steps to transform self sabotage into self mastery, it reads like a journal entry from a 21 year old following a bad break up, filled with vague descriptions of she could get her life back on track without any clear plan or true insight. Here’s what I learned from this book - research the author of your self help books before purchasing. If they’re 30 and have no formal education in psychology or counselling, it’s unlikely there is anything here for me. Who do I contact to get the last 5 hours back?

Healing journey
This was recommended as part of a healing yourself "must read." I found it to be helpful, intuitive, for anyone ready to search within themselves to find answers. It was a time a little repetitive. The writer obviously wanted you to listen to those points. I have some things so profound that I have written these down in my book of quotes. Great read if you're ready to do some real work.

Mixed bag
Came highly recommended by several people. There were a few very helpful and interesting insights. However, there were a few very odd assertions made and particularly some jarring contradictions. If you’ve read any self help especially any somatic concepts eg Louise Hay or books like The Great Leap by Gay Hendricks then there won’t be much new information here for you. I was also put off by several assumptions and limited views on a few key concepts, even some of the toxic positivity that other parts of the book claim to be something to avoid.

Profound wisdom
Being the one who came out of the rock bottom to heights that were unimaginable even before the depression, I only wish I had this book at the time. But by following these guidelines one can definitely emerge from the darkness one small step at the time. Even though being at the top right now this book has helped me to notice others who are struggling and also benefitted me to truly see the remarkable post-traumatic growth. Definitely gave me few tears of happiness.

Highly recommend
I loved this book. I would put in my air pods and listen to it each morning on my daily walk. I found it useful to just read/listen to a section at a time and allow myself to really process and ponder what was being said.
I read other reviews before reading this book of how people read this book more than once… that’s going to be me as well. Now I’ve finished it, I will go back and re-listen to it. I have a hunch that I’ll learn something new no matter how many times I listen to this book.
This book is fantastic and pretty life changing, even to those who are already far down the path of spiritual awakening, self development and growth. Highly recommend.

Underwelming
I wanted this to live up to the hype, but it did not.
Perhaps this would be helpful for someone new to “self development”, but for me it read like a lot of stating the obvious. Most of the points made in this book are paraphrased themes of best selling self help books, and at worst a bunch of Pinterest quotes pushed together.
The tone is dogmatic “you must do this” or “you cannot do that” with very little science or data to back up claims. Disappointing and overhyped, and I did not enjoy the narrator’s cheesy and sing songy performance.

Fell Short
I quickly picked this book up after seeing almost everyone talking about it with high praises. It ended up being unexpectedly repetitive, and at many times felt more like a positive affirmations track than an actual book. The messages were nice, but offered much less science-backed examples than other similar books, and most of the 'tactics' given were very metaphorical; you'll 'know it's working' because you can 'feel your inner child' and stuff like that. When it comes to exercises, it's not much help to the emotionally congested to just tell us you're certain we'll see certain deep mental montages and just 'feel' when it's correct. Probably a good starter book, but didn't have enough substance for me.

A must for anyone going through life transformation
I've been hyper-focusing on my growth over the last 3 years (since D-Day/Diagnosed at 40 ADHD) and this book is something I wish I listened to 3 years ago. There are so many great points the author brings up, which take a topic and shifts your angle of perspective of it. I found a lot of quotes from the book on google and they are so good. I recommend this book for someone who wants to get to the root of issues in their life, but you've gotta be open and capable of creating new awareness. If you are, this book can help you make sense of things you weren't able to identify or maybe understand before.
There are also a couple of topics covered and discussed that hit real close to home with my ADHD. This book can help you come up with areas to focus on (no pun intended) using CBT.

Uncovering Our Mountains
Brianna Wiest does a phenomenal job with helping her readers see the deeper rooted things in our lives that we need to focus on to achieve the healing we are all searching for in life. We often think we know the true problems in our lives that we need to fix so that we can have a better life but after reading this book I realized that most of us are just treating the symptoms and not the actual core problem. If you’ve been dealing with self sabotage in your life I highly recommend this book. It helped me uncover things I’ve been working years to uncover by simply getting me to realize the symptoms are the area we need to be focusing on.

A book of self reflection I’ve been looking for
This book has given me more perspective on my life than conversations I’ve had with an actual therapist. It made my mad cry and say ahha at the same time. If your looking for something to help you find the answers to questions you’ve been asking about yourself for a very long time, this is it. I hope it brings the next person what it brought me… clarity

Simply a list of attempted inspirational quotes
Couldn't get past chapter 1. There was simply no story, just sentence after sentence of words trying to be inspiring. There seemed to be no cohesion between sentences most of the time.

Disappointing
I would not recommend this book. There were a few nuggets of wisdom, but mostly empty cliches.

Why is it so hyped up?
The only reason I can think of why this book is overly hyped is lack of basic life experiences. Because if you’re over 20 it is generally a universal experience to go through the things the author describes in the book and find your own unique way to deal with it.
Apart from that, my previous book on Audible was the Atomic Habits. The fist half of the Mountain is You is an oversimplified version of Atomic Habits word for word with no research or supporting materials. If that’s not bad enough, I can clearly hear her mixing the book the Vortex by Abraham Hicks into her writing, which should be identified as a teaching school if it’s used.
This book is a pure, undiluted “motivational speaker” book, in the worst sense. I could barely finish it also because of the annoyance that the voice caused (but I can never just put a book down after starting). The narrator tries too hard to be “joyous” and it shows.
2 stars because some beginners on the topic might be inspired to read more on it.

Perfection
Brianna Wiest has written a few hours of narrated perfection. This audiobook will
Prove more useful than months of 1-2-1 psycho therapy. It is the best book I’ve ever read/heard on the subject of experiencing enlightenment. Get it. Trust me.
Ps. The guy at the top of this review chain sounds bitter and jealous to me.

No solutions?
I felt like the book pointed out all the obstacles we face in our minds, but very little practical methods to surpass them. I spent my time relating to some of the challenges, but being left thinking “Okay? So what’s the solution?” And so overall the book became useless for me, it only served to point out the obvious. I had expected some really ground breaking tools to use given how popular the book is!

simplistic but eye opening.
this book creates simplistic, but eye opening ways of looking at the problems, that arise in the mind and how to approach them.

Best book of this year 2023
The book is a compelling exploration of the intricate relationship between our thoughts, emotions, and the stress we encounter in our lives. Stacey Glemboski expertly navigates the complexities of the human mind, breaking down the barriers that often hold us back from living our best lives.

Felt like summary of a book
I felt this book summarised all the teachings found in other books. It felt like that because every subject in the book was mentioned very briefly. I personally felt a lack of deeper explanations. It did remind me of the important things one has to focus on, but it didn't help to unravel the mountain in me as I expected.
