Story
A modern classic, this epic tale of families, romance and political intrigue, set in India, never loses its power to delight and enchant listeners. At its core, A Suitable Boy is a love story: the tale of Lata - and her mother's - attempts to find her a suitable husband, through love or through exacting maternal appraisal. At the same time, it is the story of India, newly independent and struggling through a time of crisis as a sixth of the world's population faces its first great general election and the chance to map its own destiny.

Story
Neville "Bunt" Mullard and his mother, Betty, see Hong Kong as part of Great Britain; a cozy, monotonous, beguilingly pleasant part, in which the family business has afforded them a comfortable living. They can see China from their living room, but they have never been there. Certainly they have never been forced to think about the impending "Chinese take-away" until mainland businessman Mr. Hugo offers them a tidy sum for their textile factory. Bunt refuses him out of hand, but it soon emerges that this well-spoken gentleman is different from the Hong Kong Chinese....

Publisher's Summary
This riveting tale from critically acclaimed author Paul Theroux inspired a powerful motion picture and is considered a modern masterpiece. Allie Fox is a brilliant inventor. He’s also a deeply paranoid man who is disenchanted with American materialism and conformity. Abandoning his old life, he believes he can build a better existence for his family in the Honduran jungle. But Allie’s utopian ideals are more easily imagined than realized, and soon his dark obsessions lead his family down an extremely angerous path.

A genius who is also crazy
An American inventor fed up with modern life moves his family to Honduras. They buy an island and attempt to spread modernity by building a massive ice making machine in the jungle. Some pirates come and their fancy machine not only kills them when it explodes, but also contaminates their island. The family flees with what little they have and starts again, but too close to the sea. Anticipating this the father builds their house to be like and arc, which is necessary when the rainy season finally takes them out to sea. They drift into a missionaries camp, some friends from their passage to Honduras, and the father again does something foolish. This was pretty good and was even made into a movie, but the movie lacked the details. This is one of Theroux's better fictional works. It made me think that perhaps modernity is sometimes a dangerous thing and some places should never be modern.

Excellent narration
What does David Aaron Baker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
His performance particularly with the lines of Allie Fox is chilling, almost scary.
Any additional comments?
I haven't seen the movie, but after this great narrator performance I'm not sure if I even want to spoil it.

A compelling book
Most narrators have an English accent so it’s a bit of a whammy when it’s spoken in an American voice. The main character suffers from and inflicts on his family his violent illusions of certainty. It’s scarcely believable the hunger, wretchedness and danger this monster puts them through. Like the rivers of Honduras you follow the story’s stream to it’s coastal conclusion. Theroux is a fine writer and thus is a splendid good book.
