Publisher's Summary

In the latest novel in Genevieve Cogman's historical fantasy series, the fate of worlds lies in the balance. When a dragon is murdered at a peace conference, time-travelling librarian spy Irene must solve the case to keep the balance between order, chaos...and the Library.

When Irene returns to London after a relatively straightforward book theft in Germany, Bradamant informs her that there is a top secret dragon-Fae peace conference in progress that the Library is mediating, and that the second-in-command dragon has been stabbed to death. Tasked with solving the case, Vale and Irene immediately go to 1890s Paris to start their investigation.

Once they arrive, they find evidence suggesting that the murder victim might have uncovered proof of treachery by one or more librarians. But to ensure the peace of the conference, some librarians are being held as hostages in the dragon and Fae courts. To save the captives, including her parents, Irene must get to the bottom of this murder - but was it a dragon, a Fae, or even a librarian who committed the crime?

I love this narrator

I love Susan Duerden’s voice and the way she brings characters together, I was so excited to listen to the next book in the series till I saw the narrator changed, I’m crushed. This series is lovely to listen to because of her performance and now I am so sad that the next book is such a jarring change.

another great adventure

I had not listened to a book in this series for a while. as before the narrator's pace takes some getting used to. I felt the author used her practice of repeating a thought several ways a bit too much. the story line was very exciting. I didn't feel it was slow in any section. glad she brought back all the main characters. she didn't sacrifice them to add new ones

Irene finally gets to be a detective

The 5th entry in the Invisible Library series proves as captivating as the last 4. Building on the events that formed the basis for Book 4, the story dives deeper into the reasons behind the assassination when another happens during the peace summit. This time, Irene is tasked with finding the killer. As has been hinted from the beginning, Irene loves detective novels and this time she gets to star in her own. Lots of twists and turns are to be expected, though I feel there were a few toward the end that were just twisting the knife (come on, she already saved the day, let her just collapse and be done with it!) As always, Susan Duerden did an amazing job voicing all characters (male and female!). She IS Irene Winters (and everyone else as well). Definitely a must read for fans of Irene and co. I once again find myself wishing Audible had a way to follow a series. This book had been out for far too long before I realized it!

Ms Cogman Does Not Disappoint!

I would recommend Ms Cogman's "Library" series to anyone who enjoys originality. She has built a world with wonderful characters, each with unique talents. Her plots keep you involved and wanting more. Although I believe the books can be heard and enjoyed individually, I highly recommend starting from the beginning of the series to get the full benefit of character and plot development.

Too Political

I don’t really like where this series is heading. I don’t understand why we had to take a political turn in the story. I found the story to be really boring though a lot happens in this book. I would rather go back to when Irene was just looking for books.

Interesting Plot and Set Up

Irene is up to her neck in plots. Seems that several different faction want this peace conference to fail while others want to control the process. I loved seeing Vale, Silver, Ky and Irene all work to make sure everything goes correctly and peace is at least a possibility. This is a very complex plot that takes so many twists and turns you could get whiplash reading or listening to it. An unexpected consequence comes when Irene get a new position. A great set up for further aduties that Irene has as a librarian of the Invisible Library. Susan Duerden does a great job as the voices in The Mortal Word.

The best of the series so far

I love The Invisible Library series and in fifth book Cogman surpasses herself. The Blood Countess is a great, unnerving antagonist and the twists and turns of actors in the dragon, fae and even library factions makes for compulsive listening. All that and Cogman’s vivid and vital otherworldly Paris make for compulsive listening. Can’t wait for book 6 now :)

A series that goes from strength to strength

I imagine this would be enjoyable if you’re not read any of the previous stories. The history adds even more depth and enjoyment. Irène goes from strength to strength, with courage and excellent manners, as always. Now I can’t wait for the next one. Muster, espionage, dragons, seduction, cats, witches, Paris, a great detective, an invisible library, this book is a whirlwind adventure with more heart than most. A special thank you to Susan Duerdin for maintaining the characters ‘individual voices across five novels.

Nice

Love the narrator, the characters (new and old) and the story. Good job. Nice bit of fantasy without going too unrealistic or requiring understanding of a Tolkien sized universe.

Great book, annoying reader

I enjoyed the book, as I have all previous in the series. But not so keen on this narrator. Really big problem is the male American voice at the beginning and end of the book call it "The Mortal World" TWICE!!! Book is called The Mortal Word!!! I would be really cross about this if I was the author.

Fantastic story wrong narrator

I love Genevieve Cogman’s books. Richly descriptive and engaging. The reason I have not rated the audio version 5* is I really struggled with the narration. I found the narrators voice flat and lacking inflection. I also found it hard to differentiate between characters due to sentences and speeches running into each other.
