About this listen

'When you lift up women, you lift up everybody - families, communities, entire countries... In her book, Melinda tells the stories of the inspiring people she's met through her work all over the world, digs into the data, and powerfully illustrates issues that need our attention... I've called Melinda an impatient optimist and that's what she delivers here - the urgency to tackle these problems and the unwavering belief that solving them is indeed possible.' Barack Obama

How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings - and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity.

In this moving and compelling New York Times bestseller, Melinda shares lessons she's learned from the inspiring people she's met during her work and travels around the world. As she writes in the introduction, 'That is why I had to write this book - to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.'

For the last twenty years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: if you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down.

Melinda provides an unforgettable narrative backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention - from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. and, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world - and ourselves.

Writing with emotion, candour and grace, she introduces us to remarkable women and shows the power of connecting with one another.

When we lift others up, they lift us up too.

This is a powerful book because it does two things, it makes one aware of the plight of women in theirs world countries but it also inspires hope in all of us in the way they strategically band together to provide opportunities for the next generation. I also thought the way the Gates foundation operates in these areas is clever, they research what is working and then rally behind it, rather then walk in and espouse their views, they go with whatever works. There were lots of things in the book that also related to Western Marriages and women trying to get ahead in a male dominated workforce.

I felt more worthy because I had read it

This book should be compulsory;sory reading in secondary school and MBA students, if not everyone else. Melinda's style and clarity of understanding issues and willingness to listen to others and reflect is obvious and leads to a very readable, enjoyable, and profound book

Incredible clarity and insight

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this

When our eyes are opened by stories, when we hear, reflect, we aim to do better through small change.

I loved this book. I was horrified, gobsmacked, at times shaken. Yet also glad to know how some women exist, the best way they know how.

For example how contraception can structure planned, healthy families. Not the same as family planning. And goes beyond if women can have children, want children or live with a road blimp in some connections, one that if not financially prepared for puts numerous strains on both partners ability to cope, that’s not the same as grow together.

I had no idea how many girls and women died in childbirth. How their medical complications could negatively impede their wellbeing, or their partner, other children.

And I cried on reading about the sex workers of India as the foundation felt condoms were the answer to HIV spread, yet workers needed their clients to stop beating them considering them little value.

A glimpse to just how tough some communities globally exist beyond geographical burdens but also cultural practices considered normal through alienation, silence, violence & passed on no matter the science, medical interventions available. Money matters but together with a will to improve lives. Listening empowers as sometimes what seemed most important becomes secondary to achieving healthier outcomes.

A clear message, beautifully spoken like listening to an old friend. Thank you!

Very powerful read…how disadvantage creates a momentum of tangled webs called life that really is horrific, yet…
