Summary
'This land is millions of years old and has held secrets that we are able to uncover to this very day, yet the same land seems to have swallowed Max without a trace.'
In the middle of Missing Persons Week, teenager Max Galbraith disappears after a party at the two-up ring on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie. With hundred-year-old mine shafts hidden in the area, no one can be sure whether he got lost while under the influence of drugs or if something more sinister has happened.
Lily Carter, a talkshow radio host, receives information about Brendan Cook, another Kalgoorlie teenager who disappeared in similar circumstances the year before. But the police didn't launch a full-scale search for Brendan. Why not?
Enter Detective Angie Sullivan, new to Kalgoorlie and yet to understand how the town works. With no clear links between the two cases, and Lily accusing the police of incompetence, the town is tipped into uproar. What secrets are hiding out there in the bush? And can Angie discover them before any more kids go missing?
'The parameters of the police and the laws about forcing young runaways to return home are eye opening. McDonald's great factuality, the amazing plot twist (which I didn't see coming at all) and superb writing kept me hooked' Good Reading

Ross and I are booked to attend an author talk by Fleur McDonald at Wheelers Hill Library in April, so in January, I reserved the audiobooks of The Prospect and The Missing via BorrowBox. I listened to and reviewed The Prospect in January. A couple of weeks ago, The Missing became available, and I started listening to it. About 3 hours in, BorrowBox updated, and I got a message saying I had to go to my local library because my library card had expired. NO! I ended up using an Audible credit. Someone, remind me to go to the library and sort out my card.
The Prospect focused on investigative reporter Zara and her partner, policeman Jack. In The Missing, Jack has a new partner, Detective Angie Sullivan, who is a new arrival in Kalgoorlie, and Zara is in Perth for spoiler-y reasons. She is teamed up with Also new to town is Lily Carter, a talk-show radio host, who calls the Kalgoorlie Police Station during Missing Persons Week to ask questions about a missing teenager.
A second teenager disappears after a party at the two-up ring on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie; no one can be sure whether he got lost while under the influence of drugs or if something more sinister has happened until CCTV shows him getting into an old white van. Angie and Jack begin an investigation.
Body count = 1. I think.
The next book in the series, The Witness, is out later this week, so I should have time to fit that one in before the author talk. If you need me, I'll be thinking up tricky questions for Fleur!
