The novel centers around siblings Tom and Maggie Tulliver, who grow up at Dorlcote Mill on the River Floss. The connection between rational Tom and impetuous Maggie is challenged by a number of critical events, including their father’s death and Maggie’s attraction to Philip Wakem, the scion of a rival family. Kestelman sounds like a character in a BBC television production, and the understated drama that she brings to her narration and dialogue fits well with this meditation on family bonds.Publisher's Summary
