Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Middle Ages, then pay attention...

One of the least understood periods of European history occurred between the 6th century and the 14th or 15th century (depending on which historian you ask). Commonly called the Middle Ages, this was a time period of extreme change for Europe, beginning with the fall of the Western Roman Empire. To a continent that had seen a drastic shift in the power structure, the world seemed to be particularly harsh. Rome had been a major player across Europe for well over a millennium. Then it was gone.

In The Middle Ages: A Captivating Guide to the History of Europe, Starting from the Fall of the Western Roman Empire Through the Black Death to the Beginning of the Renaissance, you will discover topics such as:

  • Fall of the Western Roman Empire
  • Stewards of the Future - The Rise of the Byzantine Empire
  • Reclaiming Spain and Expanding One of the Strongest and Earliest Kingdoms of the Middle Ages
  • Charlemagne - A Brief Return to the Empire
  • Otto I and His New Empire
  • The Great Schism
  • The Famous (or Infamous) Crusades - 1095 to 1291
  • Forging a New England
  • The Hundred Years’ War - 1337 to 1453
  • The Horrors of Nature
  • Higher Education and The Gothic Period - How the Middle Ages Advanced Education and Architecture
  • The Renaissance
  • And much, much more!

Really interesting book.

Really interesting book. The only thing I found a little confusing at first was gone by subject matter instead of chronologically so you jump around in time a bit. I still recommend this book though.

Awesome

This book dives into all aspects, of middle ages society groups. In the ways, the groups worked with other groups. The inner workings of these groups, from peasants to King's and Queen's. The crusades were a very interesting subject. In how they deal with religious artifacts.

Enlightening

This is a particularly enlightening historical narrative that draws parallels between then and now! I was intrigued by the similarities of the societies and yet the cultural differences that brought about the seemingly endless conflicts that still exist between European countries today!

Excellent

This all-inclusive survey of what we refer to as The Middle Ages covers a lot of ground from the fall of Rome to the Renaissance. For many years, this period was treated unfairly by historians and popular folklore.

Excellent Overview

It provides an excellent overview of what the age was all about in relation to its predecessors and successor. Key changes in the cultural, religious and political order are identified and explained without boring detail. This is a good audiobook for those who want an understanding of the foundations on which the modern world was built.

The book is so well written

The book is so well written that I'm finding that I'm moving too quickly through. Before long the end will come and I'll still be wanting to read more.

Refreshing

It is refreshingly free of both the raging revisionism of contemporary historiography and the opposite error of sycophantic conformity to traditionalist views. I would have enjoyed listening to his lectures!

OK

It has some fascinating truths, lots of information, well written and is a very well made volume. I have "Viking Age" in the same series and really enjoy learning about how the people lived in those time periods lived without getting all hooked up with heavy politics or celebrities.

The Middle Ages guide audiobook

It searches the lives of workers, kings, great families, clergy and everyone in between, not only in one kingdom at one point but in most of the meaningful kingdoms. The strength of the faith is, also, explored.

GREAT

If you require to have a survey of the Middle Ages then this is a good start. It is not too in-depth but gives a great flavor of a mistaken part of this time in Europe.

A clear brief presentation to the Middle Ages

There is including the important paradox that Sparta, a state based on what might be termed farm fascism, worked as a principal defender of much more pluralistic Greek states from Persian rule. Written well and with nice examples, this is a solid work.
