Publisher's Summary

Evil exists. Evil walks the streets. And evil has spawned a diabolical new disciple in this white-knuckle thriller from New York Times best-selling author Tess Gerritsen.

Pececcavi: The Latin word is scrawled in blood at the scene of a young woman's brutal murder: I Have Sinned. It's a chilling Christmas greeting for Boston medical examiner Maura Isles and Detective Jane Rizzoli, who swiftly link the victim to controversial celebrity psychiatrist Joyce O'Donnell-Jane's professional nemesis and member of a sinister cabal called the Mephisto Club. On top of Beacon Hill, the club's acolytes devote themselves to the analysis of evil: Can it be explained by science? Does it have a physical presence? Do demons walk the Earth? Drawing on a wealth of dark historical data and mysterious religious symbolism, the Mephisto scholars aim to prove a startling theory: that Satan himself exists among us. With the grisly appearance of a corpse on their doorstep, it's clear that someone - or something - is indeed prowling the city. The members of the club begin to fear the very subject of their study. Could this maniacal killer be one of their own - or have they inadvertently summoned an evil entity from the darkness? Delving deep into the most baffling and unusual case of their careers, Maura and Jane embark on a terrifying journey to the very heart of evil, where they encounter a malevolent foe more dangerous than any they have ever faced... one whose work is only just beginning.

Less believable storyline, no less enjoyable

This wasn’t my favourite of the Rizzoli & Isles books I’ve read, the storyline seemed a bit far fetched - are they searching for a real person or an evil spirit and the strange club the members of which search out evil and seem to get a great deal of access to the investigation.
That said the writing is of the usual high standard and the characters are well developed. The book is well narrated and held my interest to the end so I would definitely recommend it.

A Brilliant series

I love the Rizzoli and Isles series. I had read a couple of later ones but am now working through them in order. The plots are excellent. Exciting and intriguing. The twist seems to get me every time but they are not completely outrageous or out of kilter with the plot.
The characters are well developed once again and I am left wanting more.
I hope audible make The Surgeon, the earliest book.

Highly recommended!

An excellent story full of spine-chilling drama, gruesome murders, and the hunt by Rizzoli and Isles for the person responsible. But is Rizzoli right and they are just looking for a very sick, twisted person, or are the members of the mysterious Mephisto Club correct and the one responsible isn't entirely human? And could time run out for them all before they find out the answers?....
Excellent writing as always, and love the characters introduced in this story. The reading is brilliant, really adding to the tension, and differentiating between characters clearly. I highly recommend this book to all R&I fans, or to those who enjoy murder-mystery and crime books - you won't be disappointed!
