Story
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

The author of the beloved number one best seller The Shepherd's Life returns with a stirring history of family, loss and the land over three generations on a Lake District farm. James Rebanks was taught by his grandfather to work the land the old way. Their family farm in the Lake District hills was part of an ancient agricultural landscape: a patchwork of crops and meadows, of pastures grazed with livestock and hedgerows teeming with wildlife. And yet, by the time James inherited the farm, that landscape had profoundly changed.

- By Georgeorges on 28-07-2020
Publisher's Summary
From Christian libertarian farmer Joel Salatin, a clarion call to listeners to honor the animals and the land and to produce food based on spiritual principles.
Joel Salatin is perhaps the nation's best known farmer, whose environmentally friendly, sustainable Polyface Farms has been featured in Food, Inc. and Time magazine. Now, in his first audiobook written for a faith audience, Salatin offers a deeply personal argument for earth stewardship and calls for fellow Christians to join him in looking to the Bible for a foodscape in line with spiritual truth. Salatin urges Christians to rethink America's allegiance to cheap corporate food that destroys creation in its production, impoverishes third world countries, and supports oligarchical interests. He wonders why Christians ignore and even revel in unhealthy eating habits and factory farming that runs counter to God's design. With scripture and biblical stories, Salatin presents an alternative and shows listeners that in appreciating the pigness of pigs, we celebrate the glory of God.

Well done Mr Salatin.
Joel shares his revelations about biblical principles and their deep correlation with a functional food system. Joel seeks to bridge the gap between the left and the right, the christian and the secular, and unite them behind a common goal of instituting regenerative practices on a culture altering scale. Joel achieves this while maintaining his integrity as a follower of Christ. This is a very well done author narrated audiobook and shows the broad skill set Joel has developed.

I just like listening to Joel!
I'm not the target audience, buy I always appreciate the understanding I'll achieve by listening to someone who doesn't agree with me. in this case, I agree with Joel's mission to encourage Americans to take their food more seriously, learn about it and support the good food that comes from good sustainable practices. unfortunately in this day and age, many self-described Christians do not live by teachings of the Bible and the example of Jesus Christ, thus Joel as a consistent man of faith has to write this book to educate his fellow Christians. People of deep faith are very helpful to the survival and ascendancy of human civilization, but people of faith just in name and not with the full understanding cause destruction with their limited understanding of their faith. (this is very general and applies to Muslims and people of other religions as well) if I turn Christian one day, I'll credit it Joel Salatin! :)

Incredible and convicting
I already supported a food system like he lays out as the ideal but this book both solidified my motives to continue to do this (aka quit cheating here and there) as well as inspired me to increase my earth stewardship (maybe get some backyard chickens?). Amazing book by Salatin - I can’t recommend it more for all Christians.

Nail on the Head
Just like the author stated at the beginning, this book was definitely a breath of fresh air. I have been touching on these subjects for the past few years behind our pulpit, and will continue to do so. Most importantly, I pray for strength to be a doer and not just a hearer. I have agreed with and admired Joel's farming practices for years and hope to implement them on a much smaller scale on my property.

Give it a chance!
Now that I have finished listening to this book, I loved it. In the beginning chapters, I nearly returned it because it was not so much a pricking of the conscience as a stabbing, but it got much better as he turned from “everything you’re doing is wrong” to “here are ways we can all do better, and why!” This book relies heavily on Biblical counsel and wisdom, so non-Christians can take it for what it’s worth to them. It is still an excellent resource for ways we can all do better in caring for our world, whether we believe it’s just a chunk of rock hurtling through space waiting for the sun to wink out, or we believe it is the greatest of creations, and the reason for existence. Really, give it a chance.

Must read, how to get the planet and you healthy
Joel Salatin has a deep knowledge of agriculture and how to improve the future. He is a master of the English language and treats the listener to new vocabulary and in depth learning experiences. All agriculturalist must read, every person even the most ordinary person that is not agriculture must read. In fact if you eat food you should read (listen) to this book, and take to heart some of the great advise that you will find within the book. The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs is artifully and skillfully read and performed by Joel himself. Enjoy listening and I hope you take some action afterwards.

Rather read "Folks this Ain't normal"
As a Christian, in a very similar type of church to Joel, and therefore the target audience of this book, I found it largely unconvincing. I think Joel tried to hard to justify things from the Bible that just weren't there. This is known as eisogesis; reading ones own meaning into the bible rather than trying to extract the intended meaning, called exogesis. The parts of the book that I found the most convincing were the parts that overlapped with "Folks this Ain't normal". So as a Christian, just go read that book.
