Publisher's Summary
Read by Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Spooks)
The Man From St Petersburg is a dark tale of family secrets and political consequences. Ken Follett's masterful storytelling brings to life the danger of a world on the brink of war.
A Secret Negotiation
1914. Tensions are rising as Europe finds itself caught in a web of alliances and dangerous warmongering. To help tip the balance in their favour, Britain aims to draw Russia into an alliance with them instead of Germany. Czar Nicholas’s nephew, Prince Aleksei, is sent to London for secret naval talks with Lord Walden.
A Play for Power
Walden has a personal connection to Aleksei; his wife is Aleksei’s aunt. And they are not the only ones interested in the Russian's arrival; so too are Walden’s wilful, idealistic daughter, the head of Special Branch, and a ruthless Russian anarchist.
A World at War
With the British desperately needing a signed treaty and the fate of the world hanging in the balance, the destinies of these individuals become inextricably linked, as tragedy threatens to shatter the Waldens’ complacency . . .

A good listen. Worth the time spent. Richard Armitage is a good narrator. good to see Follett still writing.

Brilliant, a true Ken Follett novel
Is this really more than fiction ? In typical Ken Follett style the formula works to bring together action, action and more action in waves of highs and lows weaving a great story.

Just a Good Listen
I read most of the reviews and there is always people who dissect a story technically, I suppose they may well be correct. However if you want a good story, plot a little foreseeable this is very much in the same vein as Night Over Water and The Hornet Flight, if your expecting Eye of the Needle or Jackdaws this doesn’t hit those marks, but a good listen, the story builds slowly but not dramatically so, I enjoyed it

Delayed suspense
This is not one of those many wonderful Ken Follett stories which lead you, almost from the outset, on an almost unbearable journey of high drama and suspense.
Though well written and cleverly set in a time of momentous political and international events, it takes most of the novel to work up to a sensational climax. On the way there, it is rather plodding. Frequent flash backs do not help. I frequently felt the need to fast forward.

Not his best work
I found this story disappointing. Not up to Follett’s usual standards though I still had to find out what happened in the end. Richard Armitage excellent as ever

Poor Narration
Just about everything I'm afraid , read more like a Jilly Cooper bonkbuster than a serious spy novel , in fairness I only endured the first 3 chapters .Very disappointing
