Story
Fran finds her standing by the swings. A little girl, Esther, no older than seven years old, by herself in the dead of night, her pretty but old-fashioned yellow dress covered in grass stains and her hair dishevelled. She says she's waiting for Father, and that strikes Fran as particularly odd. After Esther is reunited with her family, Fran can't stop thinking about this pious child whose imaginary friend is God. Fran's instincts tell her something is very wrong. Why does Esther keep running away from home, and how did she get that bruise on her leg?

An unforgettable story about a family with a terrible secret. When a tragedy breaks a family apart, what can bring it back together? Until, years later, they are forced to return to the house they grew up in and to confront what really broke the family apart.

Reads like a Good Suspense Novel...
...despite not actually claiming to be a suspense novel. The suspense is built around the anticipated coming together of 4 completely separate domestic/family stories - stories of 4 separate people. Beautifully crafted, plenty of emotion. There's even the possibility of a murder at one point. Plenty of cliff hangers at the end of each chapter as we switch to one of the other 4 stories, eventually leading to a very satisfactory ending. I'm a fan of Lisa Jewell, and I'm pleased to say that this latest book is up there with her best.
