Story
Ann Patchett’s award winning, New York Times best-selling Bel Canto balances themes of love and crisis as disparate characters learn that music is their only common language. As in Pratchett’s other novels, including Truth & Beauty and The Magician’s Assistant, the author’s lyrical prose and lucid imagination make Bel Canto a captivating story of strength and frailty, love and imprisonment, and an inspiring tale of transcendent romance.

Cleverly Done
I bought this book because I love almost anything associated with Tom Hanks. His explanation of how movies are made was cleverly achieved in a novel. It is no wonder they cost so much to be produced. I have to admit that my mind wandered off at times but I still enjoyed it, especially when Tom read his parts. If you’re a movie buff I’m sure you’d enjoy the book.

A wonderful look behind the green curtain
This started off slow and hokey but built to such an extent that you were invested in almost all the characters( not you, ok).
But in the meantime we were treated to a detailed exposition of the art and grunt work of filmmaking.
I wish my teachers had taught me like this.
Well done Tom and all the people that helped you on this

Fine novel with documentary flavour.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, written with a real novelist's flair, but much of it was not invented I am sure. Tom Hanks has seen such directors, actors, makeup artists, assistants et al, and woven them into a fascinating tapestry for our entertainment. It will not win the Nobel Prize for literature, but has some very amusing and pointed writing, bringing us to sympathize with even the most ridiculous people, eg the egotistical actor who argues the point with his director for hours, holding up the whole production. If a young person feel driven to 'get to Hollywood' in any capacity at all, he or she would be well advised to read or listen to this book. I hope Tom Hanks will write another such novel.
