Updated with a new afterword by the author

'Douglas Murray fights the good fight for freedom of speech ... A truthful look at today's most divisive issues' – Jordan B. Peterson

'[Murray’s] latest book is beyond brilliant and should be read, must be read, by everyone' – Richard Dawkins

Are we living through the great derangement of our times?

In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

One of the few writers who dares to counter the prevailing view and question the dramatic changes in our society – from gender reassignment for children to the impact of transgender rights on women – Murray’s penetrating book, now published with a new afterword taking account of the book's reception and responding to the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests, clears a path of sanity through the fog of our modern predicament.

Absolutely superb. A must listen for those wondering how we got to the strange place we are in. Can't recommend more highly.

Tantalisingly controversial for a left leaner such as myself, but Mr. Murray presents his arguments carefully and at times, convincingly. Beautifully read (albeit a little snidely at times) and well written, this is a must read for woke inner city lefty Get Up blow ins and Sky News presenters, RWNJs and Murdoch aficionados alike. After a somewhat bleak litany of social ills he finishes the book thoughtfully leaving the reader feeling stimulated and contemplative, itching to get deep and meaningful at the next dinner party. Warning - you may hate him.

My first read of a Douglas Murray book

Thank you for this book. Thank you for emphasising the importance of critical thinking and civil discourse in a social media driven digital world that is becoming ever more polarised, a world that is increasingly ruled by the mob, and where many are not given a voice, particularly if they don’t pick a side.
I only hope that enough people read this book to make a difference so that respect for each other and our differences, protecting free speech and true freedom, giving credence to fact and empirical evidence, to be able to listen to each other and to simply be kind to one another become the norm.

Probably the most sensible book I have read in a long time.

Superb production. Douglas Murray is an extraordinarily gifted social commentator. Long may he reign over us.

Excellent coverage of the topic, explored in a sensible, rational way. Should be required reading for all.
