Story
Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

Story
What is the role of the writer? Prophet? High priest of art? Court jester? Or witness to the real world? Looking back on her own childhood and writing career, Margaret Atwood examines the metaphors which writers of fiction and poetry have used to explain - or excuse! - their activities, looking at what costumes they have assumed, what roles they have chosen to play. In her final chapter she takes up the challenge of the title: if a writer is to be seen as "gifted", who is doing the giving and what are the terms of the gift?

Story
The Years is a personal narrative of the period of 1941 to 2006 told through the lens of memory, impressions past and present - even projections into the future - photos, books, songs, radio, television, and decades of advertising and headlines, contrasted with intimate conflicts and written notes from six decades of diaries. Local dialect, words of the time, slogans, brands, and names for ever-proliferating objects are given a voice here. The voice we recognize as the author's continually dissolves and re-emerges.

Publisher's Summary
From the Stella Prize-winning author of The Natural Way of Things and The Weekend.
In this essential, illuminating book, award-winning writer Charlotte Wood shares the insights she has gained over a career paying close attention to her own creativity, to the world around her and the working methods of leading artists in many fields.
Drawing on research and decades of observant conversation and immersive reading, Charlotte shares what artists can teach the rest of us about inspiration and hard work, how to pursue truth in art and life, and how to find courage during the difficult times: by facing down what we fear and keeping going when things seem hopeless.
A rich inner life is not just the preserve of the arts. The joys, fears and profound self-discoveries of creativity - through making or building anything that wasn’t there before, any imaginative exploration or attempt to invent - I believe to be the birthright of every person on this Earth. If you live your life with curiosity and intention - or would like to - this book is for you.

Rivals Big Magic
An intelligent, current and Australian rival to Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic. Hopefully Australian creative writing courses, including universities, will start to use this informative and beautiful text on creativity in preference to Gilbert’s now.
I have listened five times and will listen again. Every time I discover something new or remember something important to my creative process that I had forgotten. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the creative process, be it their own or that of others. For me it has been affirming, created more space and freedom in how I work and maybe, most importantly, reminded me to create from a place of joy instead of fear.
