About this listen

The Lost Country centers on Edgewater, who's recently been discharged from the navy, and a one-armed con man named Roosterfish who takes him under his wing as they both search desperately for a forgotten past and a future that may never come. The Lost Country cements Gay as one of the strongest voices in Southern literature, alongside Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O'Connor, and William Faulkner.

I didn’t realise The Lost Country was compiled and released after the death of William Gay. The story of cobbling it together from scraps of paper found in various boxes in various locations is almost as good as the novel itself.

Very Cormac. Sparse. Southern Gothic. The story washes along in beautiful blue-collar prose.

Characters arrive mythic and fully formed. Waiting to be written. Roosterfish, a one-armed conman who paints barn roofs with oily brown water rather than paint. Buddy Bradshaw, a man with no plan beyond anger, who cuts down his ex-girlfriend’s house with a chainsaw.

Brought to life by a wonderful performance. The Lost Country reads like a series of dark American landscapes. Empty. Quiet. Hard to shake.
