Publisher's Summary

One person talks; the other listens. It's so basic that we take it for granted. Unfortunately, most of us think of ourselves as better listeners than we actually are. Why do we so often fail to connect when speaking with family members, romantic partners, colleagues, or friends? How do emotional reactions get in the way of real communication? This thoughtful, witty, and empathic book has already helped over 100,000 people break through conflicts and transform their personal and professional relationships. Experienced therapist Michael P. Nichols, PhD, provides vivid examples, easy-to-learn techniques, and practical exercises for becoming a better listener and making yourself heard and understood, even in difficult situations.

Critic Reviews

"This is more than a good book; it is a vital manual for any of us who would either like to feel good about our relationships or avoid dying before the end of our lives." (Carol M. Anderson, MSW, PhD, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

one of the best books I have read in a long while

I thought the book was fantastic. There were so many gems I wish I had known about 20 years ago...... I might still be married. Anyway, I intend to listen to this book pretty much every day for the rest of my life. Even if only for 10 minutes at a time while I'm doing some shopping or walking my dog. There's just a constant stream of insights that I found really valuable. Now it's time to apply them to my relationships. Thanks for this gem Michael

Simple yet profound

Perhaps the best book that I have read so far on family, love, relationships and life. Speaking simple truths that can and will make a profound difference in one of the most fundamental and elementary skills that we each possess. A skill that can heal or if not done well wound our love ones. A great read.

An insightful sermon on human relations

At almost 12 hours, this insightful but ponderously long book is over-laden with granular and repetitive anecdotes that form one long evangelical sermon about the need for better listening.
