Story
Shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, a country house called The Firs in Buckinghamshire was requisitioned by the War Office. Sentries were posted at the entrance gates, and barbed wire was strung around the perimeter fence. To local villagers it looked like a prison camp. But the truth was far more sinister. This rambling Edwardian mansion had become home to an eccentric band of scientists, inventors and bluestockings. Their task was to build devastating new weaponry that could be used against the Nazis.

Nikki Gemmell's world changed forever in October 2015 when the body of her elderly mother was found and it became clear she had decided to end her own life. After the immediate shock and devastation came the guilt and the horror, for Nikki, her family, relatives, and friends. No note was left, so the questions that Elayn's death raised were endless. Was the decision an act of independence or the very opposite? Was it a desperate act driven by hopelessness and anger, or was her euthanasia a reasoned act of empowerment?

Story
Exploring themes of ownership and abandonment, Eleanor Anstruther’s debut is a fictionalised account of the true story of Enid Campbell (1892-1964), granddaughter of the 8th Duke of Argyll, who sold her son to her sister for £500. Interweaving one significant day in 1964 with a decade during the interwar period, A Perfect Explanation gets to the heart of what it is to be bound by gender, heritage and tradition, to fight, to lose, to fight again. In a world of privilege, truth remains the same; there are no heroes and villains, only people misunderstood.

You were either fit and trim or you weren't working hard enough. Your body was how you conveyed wealth and status to your peers, it was a personality trait, a symbol of goodness and values: an ethical ideal. In recent decades women have made momentous progress fighting the patriarchy, yet they are held to ever-stricter, more punishing physical standards. Self-worth still plummets, and eating disorders are more deadly for how easily they are dismissed.

David Attenborough first appeared in front of a television camera in the 1950s when, together with London Zoo's Curator of Reptiles, Jack Lester, he persuaded the BBC to mount and film an animal-collecting expedition. The result was Zoo Quest. Specially recorded for audio, David Attenborough's early adventures are sometimes life-threatening, often hilarious and always totally absorbing. The warmth and enthusiasm that have made him a broadcasting legend are instantly apparent here as he recounts this magical journey.

Memories came back
- By Trevor Cowan-Clark on 16-02-2021
Publisher's Summary
A magical, charming and deeply moving fable about the journey we all take through life, about love and family, about war and resilience, about how we live in this world and how we leave it.
'Some time ago, perhaps before you were even born, a young girl was walking in her garden. She may have been called Mary - that's what most of the stories say. Mary was a little bit taller than the other girls her age and had brownish crinkly hair. She was quite thin, because she didn't always have exactly enough to eat. She liked honey and whistling and the colour blue and finding out.'
This is the story of Mary, a young girl born in a beautiful city full of rose gardens and fluttering kites. When she is still very small, Mary meets Lanmo, a shining golden snake, who becomes her very best friend. The snake visits Mary many times; he sees her city change, become sadder as bombs drop and war creeps in. He sees Mary and her family leave their home, he sees her grow up and he sees her fall in love. But Lanmo knows that the day will come when he can no longer visit Mary, when his destiny will break them apart, and he wonders whether having a friend can possibly be worth the pain of knowing you will lose them.

Charming and whimsical - love it!
OK, a 63 year old man is writing this, long past the epoch of reading fairytales to his daughter. Still, I downloaded this book on recommendation of (can't remember who).
And what a magical surprise I received!
It's a wonder-filled story about a wise little girl who meets and befriends a magical snake, who over time bestows gifts & insights on her, as he unwittingly draws some from her. They both grow and become more enlightened in the ways of each others' worlds.
She learns about the world at large and its ways (even though she already has sparkling natural hunches) and he gains insights into the feelings of man, their 'humanity', which magical snakes lack.
We then go on a journey and meet outstanding characters, each as nasty or as loving as is possible to be. And Kennedy's voice brilliantly brings those to life.
I so wish my daughter and step-kids were young so I could read this to them over a few nights. They'd be enchanted, as I was and remain.
I listened to this book while hiking in the Australian bush and felt like I floated the whole time, such was the wonder and happiness this brought me.
I think you'll also enjoy it.
