Publisher's Summary

"It's a magic wardrobe. There's a wood inside it, and it's snowing! Come and see," begged Lucy.

Lucy has stumbled upon a marvellous land of fauns and centaurs, nymphs and talking animals. But soon she discovers that it is ruled by the cruel White Witch, and can only be freed by Aslan, the great Lion, and four children.

In the never-ending war between good and evil, The Chronicles of Narnia set the stage for battles of epic proportions. Some take place in vast fields, where the forces of light and darkness clash. But other battles occur within the small chambers of the heart and are equally decisive.

Journeys to the ends of the world, fantastic creatures, betrayals, heroic deeds, and friendships won and lost, all come together in an unforgettable world of magic. So let the adventures begin.

This was the first book written in The Chronicles of Narnia. It now stands as the second book in the series, preceded by The Magician's Nephew.

Warning: abridged version.

Very disappointed to discover that this is an abridged version of the novel, after I have wasted my one credit for this month purchasing the audiobook. There was no indication in the description that the audiobook would be abridged. I see now that the image does say ‘abridged’ at the bottom, but it is so blurry that I didn’t notice it. Very frustrating.

I wanted to enjoy it more, as I enjoyed the film.

The story itself was very basic, explaining everything as it went. CS.Lewis sacrificed so many opportunities for amazing story telling for explaining the deep meaning or affect a character has on the storyline. The music in the background is also very frustrating, and makes listening to this tedious. it also occasionally becomes louder than Sir Michael Hordern, and so missed parts of what he said. Unfortunately, the film is superior to the book in this case. (This is also the same for the rest of the books in the series)

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

This is a good version to introduce children to the Chronicles of Narnia. It is short enough to interest the younger children without missing out much of the story. I have really enjoyed revisiting the stories.

Lovely

This is now my favourite version of this book :) Michael Hordon's narration makes this old favourite even more delightful.

I was wary of purchasing this because of the comments about the music, but while I can see how some might find it jarring I felt it added to the atmosphere rather than detracted.

Beautiful and nostalgic

If you didn’t grow up with this audio version of the book, then I guess it’s impossible to understand the cosy, enchanted feeling it elicits. The music is haunting and magical, the storytelling performance is gripping and compelling. I’m so glad I’ve found this and can welcome it back into my life. Perfect for a winter’s evening listening

Perfect for children

I loved this story as a child to listen to on long car journeys, or to help me fall asleep with adventurous dreams.. Having come back it as a young adult for a bit of nostalgia I find I just as enthralling and well executed as ever.

Horribke Music

Pity the music was so intrusive as it ruined a lovely reading by Michael Horden.

The lion, the witch and the wardrobe

This book is good because it has an intricate and difficult to predict storyline which makes it a good story

Amazing! Wonderful! Magical!

What a beautiful story. As I now am officially an adult at 27 I found myself listening to this story and being taken back to a young child and watching bits on tv. The narrator is amazing and does a wide variety of voices so you are encaptured by each character. The music adds to this and I spent the whole time enthralled and wondering how it would finish. I would definetly recommend and cannot wait to listen to the next one!
