About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Miss Charlotte Pettifer belongs to a secret society skilled in a very particular art. That is to say—although it mustn't be said too loudly—witchcraft.

When rumours of the long-lost amulet of Black Beryl start to circulate, it is up to Charlotte to make sure this powerful talisman doesn't get into the wrong hands.

Which is precisely what happens when the evil Lady Armitage gets her grip on it.

When Charlotte demands the help of the rakish pirate Alex O'Riley, they both set off to find the amulet.

But there is one problem—pirates and witches are sworn enemies and to be seen with one would surely break the Witchcraft Code?

And that's before sparks begin to fly....

The Princess Bride meets Jane Austen in this joyously romantic caper which follows two enemies turned allies who must uncover a power jewel and may just discover a forbidden love along the way....

The narrator does a great job of bringing the writing to life. The characters are brilliant, all with their funny sides. Easy listening.

Hilarious and well narrated.

The author has a way of creating well drawn characters who are going through new experiences and developing as people. And they’re funny and likeable, for all their faults.

Clever humour throughout and the absence of tiresome tropes makes this second in the series well worth reading. I loved both books and didn’t want them to end.

Really fun

I love the irony, sarcasm, satire and general funny way the author writes. I just burst out laughing on a regular basis when I read it. And this is my third listen!

Ties in beautifully with the preceding novel

I love the unexpected laughs, the way the author’s mind works. Despite being completely absurd it is thoroughly delightful and the characters have real depth and personality. I am delighted I found this author.

Fun, quirky and joy to read

Characters too much like Ned and Cecilia from. 1st book, repetitive and a bit boring because of it. If you haven't read the first book then you may like this.

Too Similar to the first book in the Series

I dint enjoy the novel as much h as I enjoyed listening to Elizabeth Knowelden.
I am a stickler for good narration and always on a look out for strong and confident voices.
Elizabeth, if you get to read this, I want to say, I love your voice and the way you project it. your pronunciation, diction, and voice modulation is commendable! simply superb!
thank you for this beautiful narration I thoroughly enjoyed listening.

Truly audible

This story was a funny take on pirates and witches. Unfortunately some of the scenes did drag out a bit which detracted from the pace of the novel.

It was incredibly annoying at the beginning of each chapter as there was a list of around ten things that would be covered in the chapter. It was almost as if these were the author's notes which someone had forgotten to remove before final publication. I guess if you were reading the book you could just skip past the list, but you obviously can't do that if listening to the book.

Cute and funny. Excellent narration.
