Garble!

Two major problems make Michael Gresham worth avoiding

1. While most novelists plot and plan a story, Ellsworth makes it up on the fly. The author seems as surprised from scene to scene as me. As if he got himself in a maze where he careened off walls of logical impossibilities to drag his battered narrative backward to stumble along another corridor - redefining (or abandoning)characters and plot to finally, be able to write 'the end". At which point Mr. Ellsworth was exhausted as me.

2. There aren't a lot of characters in this book but there are more than Stephen Hoye has voices. Mr. Hoye brings an annoying monotonic delivery to the lead character that's as if Star Trek's Mr. Data read us this garbled book.

At this moment there are two more books in this series... Which means that I shall save credits by buying neither of them.

Just okay

I found myself fast forwarding several times while listening to this. I am not sure if it was because of the narrator, or the story itself. I prefer books with more dialogue and less needless descriptions. I don't think I will read or listen to any more books in this series.

Rambles

There seem to be several storylines and none seem to lead you anywhere. Narration was terrible. I don't recommend,

Interesting legal thriller with so-so narration

Michael Gresham is a Chicago criminal lawyer with issues. The law firm he founded 30 years ago kicked him out so he is now on his own. His 45 year old ex-wife who he is paying $7500 monthly alimony is shacked up with a kid half her age and they are trying to have a baby. His older brother is the top civil law attorney in Chicago; well, he is when he is when not off his meds for his bipolar condition. Finally, Michael is defending an ex-con who killed the wife of the judge who sentenced him to prison. This book is a wild, if not entirely credible, ride. This novel is Book 1 of the three novel Michael Gresham series. Stephen Hoye does a nice job of narration, but I find his voice monotonous.

barn burner

Any additional comments?

The plot moves with stunning twists blending courtroom drama with compelling side stories. The romantic interludes are a little lame and the protagonist a little goody two shoes but what the hey.

It gets better…

Although the reader is rather tedious to listen to, he comes along as the story progresses. Not to worry the story carries the the heft! The speaker’s drawl and “poor mouth attitude” can be adjusted by speed to lighten his demeanor. The writer uses a little literary license in order to get around a huge recovery period required after a complete body burn by fire by jumping around the activity of the story. It’s good I’ll listen to the next with anticipation! Thanx for the story.

Great story...

But Oh. My. God. the narration! This guy should be narrating National Geographic documentaries or making sleep tapes for insomniacs. And I'm only 2 hours in! The storyline is the only thing keeping me interested.
Update: I finished and the narration did not get any better. I guess I'll read the other books because I can't listen to Mr. Hoye anymore.

Narrator monotone

I really enjoyed the story but didn't care for the narrator. His voice was so monotone it sometimes put me to sleep. Just when I thought the story was coming to an end, something else incredulous happened. The story was well written and kept me coming back despite the fact that the narrator voice was so flat with little emotion or infliction of emotion in his voice. I'm going to the next book in the series and hopeful there is a different narrator.

MIXED FEELINGS

I enjoyed the story but I did not care for the narrator. I would like to listen to the rest of the series if I can find it read by someone else.
