It is the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy and the best known.

The Pathfinder, published 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel.

The narration was shocking. It was echoing, you could hear the pages turning, the narrator paused in the wrong spots and tried to pull off different voices for characters that made it impossible to understand him. He mixed up the voices and was downright terrible.
