Sorry to see this series end

Publisher's Summary
A number one Scottish crime best seller from Denzil Meyrick; James Machie was a man with a genius for violence, his criminal empire spreading beyond Glasgow into the UK and mainland Europe.
Fortunately, James Machie is dead, assassinated in the back of a prison ambulance following his trial and conviction. But now, five years later, he is apparently back from the grave, set on avenging himself on those who brought him down.
Top of his list is his previous associate, Frank MacDougall, who unbeknownst to D.C.I. Jim Daley, is living under protection on his lochside patch, the small Scottish town of Kinloch. Daley knows that, having been the key to Machie's conviction, his old friend and colleague D.S. Scott is almost as big a target. And nothing, not even death, has ever stood in James Machie's way....

This is good
This is the second in the series and good enough to have me buy the third book. The depth in this is getting better more roots in the soil so to speak - buy the first, then this, and then see (if like me) you buy the next. If your from Scotland but don't live there anymore you will enjoy this.

another good story
I listened to this right after listening to book one and found it just as enjoyable. Probably more so really because I got to know more of the ongoing characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the story which does take a couple of really unexpected turns to add to the intrigue. The violence could be a little "bloody" for some but it certainly doesn't drive the story Another excellent narration from David Monteith. Looking forward to book 3

Daley Powered by Monteath Will Go Far!
This is an excellent read. Firstly, David Monteath has the kind of purring, warm Scottish accent that literally cuddles your ears and keeps them warm on a cold day. And he's no one-trick pony possessing as he does some great character voices too.
The story itself seemed even better to me than the first book and the town of Kinloch is becoming a real character in its own right. I'm impressed with Daley as a lead character, he's fighting certain demons that I've known myself . . . with similar amounts of success I have to admit! He's got depth and a back story which is developing in intriguing fashion. Even better his problems are developing in the present day rather than being the usual mysterious past. The supporting cast of characters are well formed and even though there are one or two of the genre's cliches in there they do seem to have hidden depths too.
The story moves at a nicely brisk pace but not so fast that Daley's hapless sidekick doesn't get the chance to raise a chuckle. The author also takes time to do a decent job of evoking that Scottish coastal feel with the residents of Kinloch giving the whole thing a strong undercurrent of character.
I predict it won't be too long before I pick up the third book!

Sadly the author appears to run out of ideas and uses tired old cliches to build suspense which even the most inexperienced listener/reader will see through. The narrator is engaging which is this books saving grace.

another great book from Denzil Meyrick. Great detective story had me gripped until the end just like his first book "whisky from small glasses". Lots of gory details and expletives all beautifully and expertly read by David Monteath who in my opinion is one of the best there is. His voice, tone and accents are perfect. I look forward to book 3. Highly recommended

Slow and Just To Far Fetched
I appreciate that fiction by its nature requires that we suspend our disbelief, and embrace the story. This story never quite figured out what it wanted to be, a pacy thriller or a crime story with humour. It started well then I found myself with little engagement with the storyline or sadly the characters. I was ready to give up but found myself on a long drive sticking with it. When it ended I was delighted it had finished

Caricature Scots police and 'bad men' villains.
The central police officers are Scots, and knowing this it is like writing by numbers. The unpleasant senior, the chav sergeant and our hero with some home troubles. The very few women even more caricatured. All interaction involves whisky, especially among the 'bad men'. The villain is not made very interesting so grim murders are substituted. I found it hard to be bothered about the 'why?' of our key villain. However the plot moves along and I got to the end. A wee dram and other Scots terms remind of early Taggart. Ian Rankin needn't worry.
